Famitsu Interviews Nomura About Kingdom Hearts 3

E3 seems to be a busy time for Nomura as he revealed two of the projects that he was working on for Next-Generation Systems. Famitsu sat down with Nomura to discuss both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3. While waiting for a full translation of the interview, here is a brief summary of the main talking points:

- They're calling the shading technique in KH3 the "Kingdom Shader" and the shaders they use will change with each world to create more authentic visual experiences based on the Disney source material.

- For KH3, they're currently looking into using Luminous Studio as the main engine. By developing on an Overspec, it makes porting the same content to both PS4 and Xbox One easier.

- The battle footage in the trailer is a movie, because the tools they're using have difficulty outputting stuff on the actual systems right now, but he promises that runs in realtime in the dev environment and it should look the same eventually.

- The two biggest new things in KH3 which he talks about are "crazy scale action" and way better enemy AI. He confirms that there will be a 3 character party in the game, but NPCs and allies in each world will also join in battles, and there will be crazy epic aerial action. He also talks about enemy AI being more complex and being able to interact with the player, like Sora riding on a vehicle type enemy and so on.

- They are also considering online features for KH3, as well as other features which have not been in KH before.

- Nomura thinks that it would be great if they can time the release of more information on KH3 at the D23 Expo Japan in October along with TGS. KH3 is seen as a rival production for FFXV. Get hype, etc.

E3: Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts Stream Shows HD 1.5 Remix Gameplay and Artbook Video

Earlier today at E3, Square Enix revealed some information and showed gameplay of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 remix on their "Square Enix Presents" stream, where they included a brand new art book video and trailer for Kingdom Hearts 1.5 remix. It was also revealed that the art book will contain a secret message for Kingdom Hearts fans from Tetsuya Nomura himself.

There will also be additional autographed artwork giveaways signed by Tetsuya Nomura on the Kingdom Hearts Facebook page, as the presentation mentions as well.

Day 1 of "Square Enix Live Presents" featured a sit down with Kingdom Hearts creator; Tetsuya Nomura, concerning the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMix, and the recently announce Kingdom Hearts III. Below is the full interview transcript, courtesy of Gematsu. (His word on Final fantasy XV can also be viewed in the link)

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix

How did you come up with Kingdom Hearts and where did the name originate?

Originally, I wanted to find a title that fits Disney because it’s a Disney-related game. When I thought of this game, I thought of amusement parks. I wanted to make something kind of like what you can imagine at Disneyland. I knew of the name “Animal Kingdom.” So “Kingdom” became the first name that came in my mind. So at first, the development team was calling it “Kingdom,” but I couldn’t get the IP for “Kingdom.” So then we thought of “Heart” as part of the story, and we just combined those together and it became “Kingdom Hearts.”

Originally, our producer Shinji Hashimoto became friends with a Disney employee. We share the same office in the same building. He chatted with people from Disney and said it would be great to make a game together in the future. He brought that idea back to us and asked me if we could make something, and that’s actually how the Kingdom Hearts franchise was born.

In terms of our relationship with Disney, it’s been good, I think, because we’ve been working together for 10 years, and we actually still have the same counterpart at the Disney side. Sometimes, of course, we’ll have heated discussions, but as a result we’ve made so many games in the [Kingdom Hearts] franchise. So I think the relationship has been pretty good.

What’s involved in the process of remastering Kingdom Hearts?

Kingdom Hearts I was created a long, long time ago. Actually, the original data was missing—it was lost. So we had to research and dig out from the actual games available and recreate everything for high-definition. Then we had to recreate graphics, and it was actually not that easy.

What makes this the definitive Kingdom Hearts experience? Especially considering this version was never released in North America?

The Final Mix version of Kingdom Hearts was available in Japan but not available in North America or Europe. I had intentions to eventually bring it everywhere, all over the world. There were additional elements that existed in Final Mix that were not seen by fans in other territories. This became a really good opportunity, and I knew that making a remastered high-def game was not something that comes by very often. So we added two games and one movie as a package in HD 1.5, made it into high-definition, and now everyone in the world can share in the Kingdom Hearts world.

Who is your favorite character?

Xehanort, who appeared for the past ten years in the whole series, is definitely one of my favorites. And also in Kingdom Hearts I, there is an enemy character named Ansem, and he’s one of my favorites as well.

What kind of worlds do you want to see in Kingdom Hearts games?

I mentioned this in other places before, but Jungle Book is one world that we always talk about—the team wants it. Each time we try to insert it, but each time it’s cut.

What does Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix mean in relation to Kingdom Hearts III?

Because we decided to make Kingdom hearts III, we decided to make 1.5. It basically shows my determination to Kingdom Hearts III. So for the fans, I wanted to make sure everybody plays 1.5 to prepare for Kingdom Hearts III.

What new worlds can we expect in Kingdom Hearts III?

Of course, I’m not allowed to say what will be coming in Kingdom Hearts III. But each time I select worlds for the game, I choose some stable choices necessary for the game’s story and of course, I also try to insert surprising factors. I want to make sure everyone is surprised to see that particular world. And so for Kingdom Hearts III, I want to make sure there are lots of surprises.

Is the battle system like previous games? Has it evolved?

Previous Kingdom Hearts titles, especially I and II, are core games, so I want to make sure an appropriate evolution is happening. And I think it’s necessary. For spin-off titles, I wanted to experiment with new challenges or new styles. Kingdom Hearts II had game systems that were well received by the game players. And I think Kingdom Hearts III will have some evolution of that game system. Also, we did a lot of experiments in spin-off game titles. Some of them were well received, some of them were really interesting, so we would like to incorporate those, as well.

Will we see any new Final Fantasy characters or get a chance to play as King Mickey?

Final Fantasy characters, whether they’re included in Kingdom Hearts III, are definitely under consideration. For a while, previous titles in the Kingdom Hearts series haven’t had Final Fantasy characters. So I think it’s time to include someone. In terms of King Mickey, I know you want to play him, I really know! So I want to take that into consideration, as well. Of course, Sora will be the main playable character, but it would be nice if other characters are playable as well. And if we take your consideration, King Mickey will be playable, too.

Are there any plans for multiplayer?

Multiplayer elements are also under consideration. We are looking into online possibilities. With that online capability in mind, multiplayer will be under consideration, as well. But again, we will announce more details at a later time.

Will summoning return in Kingdom Hearts III?

Yes, summons will be available, but in a very different form. Before, in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, you probably remember Disney franchise characters could be summoned. But in Kingdom Hearts III, it will be a very different system.

Is this the end of Organization XIII and the Nobody characters?

Yes, the battle against Organization XIII will be ended in this title. I don’t know about Nobodies, but Master Xehanort is the one who controls Organization XIII and the battle against him will be the end.

Will we actually get to see Kingdom Hearts?

I don’t want to say too much because I want you to look forward to the actual game, but Kingdom Hearts appeared occasionally during the franchise’s past ten years, and I think it will appear again.

Nomura remembers something…

For Kingdom hearts III, if you see the trailer, you might have noticed—but there is a technique called “shader.” Using that tool, the description of characters have been changed. The texture, which is to put on the surface of the character models, have been used to describe the surface of the Disney characters and make them similar to the Disney characters people are familiar with. For Kingdom Hearts III, we would change the different shader for different worlds, so that it would match those worlds.

Hello Kingdom Hearts fans! Yesterday was a great surprise when we heard the official announcement for Kingdom Hearts III, which will be available on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Today Square-Enix has posted their press release regarding Kingdom Hearts III, revealing the plot that will unfold soon.

Kingdom Hearts 3 details from Square's Press Conference

Kotaku has posted a play-by-play of Square-Enix's press conference at this year's (on-going!) E3. Nothing huge or groundbreaking, but a good read while we're all salivating for the details! Miss the trailer? Watch it in our original news post.

Kingdom Hearts III time. Hashimoto is back to first introduce last night's debut trailer.

Now to Yosuke Matsuda, president and CEO of Square Enix. "As a fan I am also looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 3," he tells us. And says he'll wait for news on it, too. He acknowledges a guest from Disney, Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants. They shake hands. Pleasants is thrilled to have everyone here. Reminds us that Kingdom Hearts is a series of role-playing games that have thrived for more than a decade. He's talking about how important Kingdom Hearts isn't just a big game but also a success.

"We will see a mature Sora who will go off on new adventures with Mickey, Donald and Goofy," he says, adding that the game will take players to Disney worlds seen and yet unseen in the series. No release date, though obviously PS4 is assumed since it was shown at that press conference. The game will also be on Xbox One.

Switching to a Q&A with Hashimoto...

Former Kotaku reporter AJ Glasser wants to know if FFXV and KH3 will not be released in Japan for Xbox One, believing there was a policy against that. Nope, Hashimoto says, worldwide for Xbox One and PS4.

A reporter asks if Square will give Xbox owners a way to catch-up on the Kingdom Hearts mythos, since KH3 is the first Kingdom Hearts on an Xbox. "We don't have any plans yet," Hashimoto said, recommending that people could look to some of the movies and books to get the history.

A question about which development team is working on the new Kingdom Hearts. "We do have many teams at Square Enix, but there is a team in Osaka who have developed a game that is launching in September called Kingdom Hearts 1.5... that team is working on it."

Any female playable characters in XV? That came from a questioner who said that the FFXV cast seemed to be all male and was wondering if Square was concerned about alienating their female fanbase. "The contents of the game re not discussed by me," Hashimoto said, before asking his questioner which female characters he liked. The questioner liked Yuna from Final Fantasy X. Hashimoto said he liked the question and would take it back to the team.

I asked if any particular older Final Fantasy games informed this new one. He said that was a better question for the game's developers. And I asked if, given, Square's past support if there were any plans for a Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts for Wii U. Because the new games are being made on Direct X 11, he said, "we just have to make sure the game can be appropriate for the tool." This one appeared to be lost in translation, sadly, as I wasn't asking about those new games but about the series in general. Sorry, Nintendo fans, I tried.

P.S. Square PR says that the cool gameplay trailer they showed for Final Fantasy XV actually won't be available until 3pm Pacific. Argh! Soon is a relative term.
