In a secret laboratory hidden beneath the earth and also in a parallel dimension, exists the mysterious and eccentric scientist, Dr. Soach, along with her unpayed intern, Maya. The two of them spend their days inventing gadgets and devices for the betterment of humanity, probably. One day, Dr. Soach created a design for a machine so powerful and so amazing, that she herself had no idea what it would do. Naturally, such an astounding and mysterious device would need an equally astounding and mysterious power source, and so she decided to send her intern on a journey to collect the Energy Crests. The Energy Crest is, in fact, a single scroll that exists simultaneously within five different dimensions. When brought together, these scrolls could create an infinite energy source, supposedly. Of course, such a task is far too great for a single intern, and so Dr. Soach summoned (abducted) some helping hands from the neighboring dimensions in order to aid her in her goal.

"As I suspected...the power source is unsuitable to the needs of my device." Dr. Soach, a rather tall woman with an overly thin frame frowned at the heap of gears and wires before her. "No, this won't do at all!" She crossed her arms and sighed.
"Maya!" she yelled across the room, "Get over here!"

"...yes, Dr. Soach...?" Maya, a college-age girl approached the doctor doubtfully.

Dr. Soach smiled broadly at her intern and began to speak. "Take a look, Maya. What do you see?"

Maya adjusted her round glasses and squinted at the mass of metal before her. "Well, it's...certainly something" she leaned closer, scrutinizing the 'device'. "Um...some sort of cleaning robot? A battery?"

"Don't be silly, Maya! This is my greatest invention yet!" Dr. Soach chuckled at her apparently obvious success.

"Oh, of course!" Maya said, not nearly as full of excitement as her employer. "So...what does it do?"

“What does it do?” the doctor laughed, “Now isn't that a question!”

“And that's not really an answer...” Maya sighed.

“Now listen, my woefully inexperienced disciple. You may be a little too young to understand this, but sometimes, as inventors we created things that are so genius, that even we, the creators, cannot fully understand them!” Dr. Soach nodded approvingly at her own sentiment.

Maya sighed again, “So what you're saying is...you have no clue what it is either?”

“Not a one!” Soach grinned exuberantly, “So, the only way to find out, is to turn it on, right?”

“Makes sense to me.” Maya agreed.

“Ah, but they're one problem!” Soach pointed her index finger directly in Maya's face, as if to make more obvious the fact that there was a problem.

Maya slumped her shoulders as she sighed once more, her voice turning monotone as she muttered her thoughts out loud. “Of course there's a problem. There's always a problem. What's the problem?”

Dr. Soach shrugged at her intern, “We're out of power, and the regular energy stones won't do any good here. You see, a mysterious machine like this needs an equally mysterious battery.”

“So...?” Maya could see where this was leading, and she didn't like it.

“So, I'm gonna send you through the teleporter to collect the energy crests! Have fun!” Dr. Soach ran up to an odd looking machine that looked almost like an oversized jack-in-the-box. As soon as she put her hand on the crank, Maya objected.

“Wait!” Maya panicked, “You can't just send me to some weird world that I know nothing about!”

Dr. Soach had a look of utter disappointment on her face. “Why not? I've done it before...”

Maya shuddered as she recalled that horrible time that she swore not to speak of to anyone. “But at least we knew what we were getting into! We have no idea what those other worlds are about!”

“Oh...okay...” The doctor sighed, “I'll just get you some back-up, in that case.

Before Maya could question what she meant by 'back-up', Dr. Soach was already turning the crank on her teleporter. For every turn, the laboratory filled with light and static, until there were three people standing in the room with them.

Dr. Soach made a grand gesture towards the three strangers. “There you go! Back-up!”

Maya could not help but stand stunned at the display of inter-dimensional kidnapping she had just witnessed.

'Deep breaths, Holden. Deep breaths.' Holden's dark eyes peeked around the corner, watching as two armed guards turned their back and headed down a hallway. 'There's no wind in here and negligible air currents coming from the vents in this building so that should make things easy.' He narrowed his eyes, focusing on the other side of the hallway just beyond the two guards. Everything around him was just a monotone of gray. The walls, the floor, and the ceiling. It wasn't much of a lair but this is where the villain who had once captured him stayed.

Holden jumped around the corner and pulled the trigger of each gun exactly once. He didn't wait for the bodies to hit the ground. Holden rounded another corner and...nothing. He quickly shut his eyes when the flash of light came. There was a noticeable tear in the fabric of space just before the light came. For a moment he believed it to be a device of his own turned against him. That couldn't have been possible. His own machine was about a year away from completion when he had fled and certainly there was not a single being on this world other than himself that could have finished it.

He opened his eyes. 'You've got to be kidding me...' Holden stood silent for a moment. "I'm not in Terra anymore..." He muttered under his breath. He looked around at the lab. The tech around suggested that it could have been the future. Though that made no sense to him. If it simply was the future, there wouldn't be anything where he was standing. With all the villains in his own world he figured that it would have been destroyed before things like the stuff around him were created. He took in a deep breath, suppressing his anger. "Why was I taken from my own world?" Holden spoke in a low growl.

Ari cranked the slider on her headphones up a notch, homing in on her mark's Leitmotif. This was her first solo mission, and she was determined not to mess it up. Her right hand twitched toward the tazer hooked to her belt. As much practice as she'd done, she'd never actually had to use the thing on anyone.

The mark seemed to notice that they were being followed--at least, that's what Ari gathered from the backwards glance, double-take, and consequent pace increase.

Ari frowned and sped up herself. She was already screwing up if she was being noticed...

...Wow. She marveled at the strange rate she was becoming accustomed to this secret super-spy thing. This is crazy.

The mark was breaking into a jog now, and the Leitmotif was becoming distant. No! Ari had already been seen, she couldn't doubt that now. And if she didn't pick up the pace, the mark would get away! Throwing caution to the wind, she sprinted after the mark. They may have been fast, but she was faster. Practically on top of the mark, she dove at the mark, about to hit--

Ari gave a shrill "Eek--!" as she continued falling through the air, blinded by a flash of light, only to nearly faceplant on a cold stone floor.

The first thing that registered (after the pain) was that she definitely wasn't in the busy street anymore. As she looked up, she realized that no, she was in a different room entirely! "Holy...!" Ari exclaimed in shock, scrambling to her feet. "Where am I?!"

Once Ichro's eyes had adjusted to the lighting after what ever had happend, he took a look around to see where he was at. It wan't Izan, and he wasn't surrounded by his friend. Instead complete and total strangers. Hearing one of the others question why was he here brought him back into reality. Why was he here in the first place That's what I'd like to know. He'd chosen not to say that out loud figuring that all of his question for the most part would be answered if he just listen.

Dr. Soach chuckled at the strangers. "Why, you're in my lab, you silly goose!" she shook her head, "honestly, what a silly thing to ask."

Maya pushed her glasses up, hoping that the light would glint off of them. "Doctor, is this really the wisest decision? These people don't know the first thing about inter-dimensional travel."

Soach let out a laugh. "Says the one who was just crying about about going alone!"

Maya turned bright red. "I wasn't crying! I was just mildly concerned!"

"Well, it's better this way, anyway!" Soach boasted, "The more the merrier, right?"

Maya sighed, giving the three strangers a look that screamed 'I'm so sorry'.

'Did that girl just say what I think she said?' Being abducted was one thing, but to imply that he did not understand inter-dimensional travel was another entirely.

"Excuse me for interrupting, but I do know the 'first thing' about inter-dimensional travel. Back in my own world I've made several publications in fact." Though...his own rough appearance didn't exactly scream out that he was an intellectual, in any dimension. He slid the two pistols into his jacket, feeling that it wasn't exactly wise to discharge a firearm in the middle of a laboratory. "So again, let me ask this. Why was I-" Holden glanced over at the other two. "Rather, why were we abducted from our respective homes?"

Millions of questions swarmed Ari's mind at once, but she somehow retained the sense to think rationally about the situation.

"Um, I second his question," she piped up, indicating the older man as she readjustied her headphones and belt after her spectacular fall. "And while we're on the subject, did you really just say interdimensional travel?" She had to admit her own life was pretty strange, but this? This seemed to be pretty out there. As she moved her headphones, they snapped against her bruised chin. "Ow."

    Then she remembered: the headphones!

Trying not to appear too eager, she replaced her headphones over her ears and fiddled with the dial, only to hear...her own Leitmotif? B-but that's impossible!

How did these people not have Leitmotifs?!

Did she just say inter-demesion travelling. Ichiro thought, still listening in to their conversation. So they were taking from their repective home and to this strange lab where some scientist and assitanct awaited them. Yeah, that wasn't strange at all. Either wa,he contiued to listen and not say anything incase anything else was said that was important or gave some more explanation.

Dr. Soach smirked at the young man's remark. "You see, Maya? You have nothing to worry about." She then turned to address the rest of them. "Now, I just need you all to assist my intern here. Just go out, have fun, and bring back the energy crest when you're done sight-seeing." She then handed what looked like a television remote to Maya. "Use this once you've found it, and you'll come back here."

As she made her way back to the teleport machine, Maya jumped. "Wait! I still think this is a bad idea!"

"But Maya," Soach said condescendingly, "I thought you wanted your college credit?"

This shut Maya up very quickly.

"Next stop: Krytchtal! Have fun, you crazy kids!"

Dr. Soach turned the crank on the teleporter four times, and with a powerful strobe light, and static all around, the three strangers, as well as Maya, were gone.

As the four strangers come to, they find themselves in a world unlike anything they had ever seen. Beneath them was neither stone nor earth, but black sand that seemed to stretch on for miles. Above them, was indeed the sky, but not the one they knew. It was a swirling symphony of different shades of orange, the lights and darks swirling endlessly into each other. In the distance is what looks like a giant glass dome, towering over a small, normal-enough looking village. However, to the south one could see black smoke rising above the horizon.

"Wait, what the heck is a Energy Crest." But by the time he had finally said something, they were already in a different dimension. "I'd wish she'd stop doing that." He said before taking a look around where they were. Aside from the few places of human civilization in the distances, they were surrounded by nothing. Turning around, he saw the black smoke above the horizon. Wnder what that is.

Before Ari had the time to ask what an "energy crest" was, there was another flash of light, and she found herself standing on a sea of black sand, the sky dominated by a strange orange sky filled with a thick smog.

    What the actual fu...

She remembered at that point that the crazy lab lady seemed to be in cahoots with the girl she'd called...Maya, right? Ari turned to her, not hiding her confusion and frustration. "Okay, you obviously know what's going on here," she said bluntly. "Care to share? Where are we, what is an energy crest, and how do we get back to our...dimensions?" The word itself felt strange on her tongue.

Maya jumped at the girl's verbal assault, warranted as it was. She adjusted her glasses, hoping that she looked cool, but then decided that this was not the time to keep up appearances. She let out a heavy sigh, giving the group an apologetic look. "Listen, I'm sorry, OK? Dr. Soach does some crazy things sometimes, and I'm just an intern! If I don't go along with what she says, I can't graduate!" Maya looked at the remote that Dr. Soach had thrust into her hand. "But that's still no reason to get strangers involved, so I'll try to get you back without her noticing." She displayed the odd looking device to the group, "We can use this."

'Hm...' Holden stepped towards Maya, looking down at the remote she was holding out towards them. He crossed his arms and looked the girl in the eye. "I have my doubts that it'll work before we get an energy crest." Holden commented, looking up at the sky afterwards. He was surprised that they didn't all suddenly die from the mysterious atmosphere. There were several reasons he could think of but none that were worth the time to investigate. "I'm going to assume we'll be spending a good deal of time together so..." Holden glanced over at the other two. "We might as well refer to each other by name. I'm Doctor Holden Grey but just call me Holden. I doubt my academic status means anything at the moment."

In others words, we can leave this place or return to our homes. Shrugging his shoulders he figured he might as well contiue with the introductions. "As long as were doing introductions, you can call me Sky." It was more of a nickname instead of his real one, but just incase they ran into someone who reconized him he'd prefer it if they didn't start treating him differently. When the time comes, he'll be the one to tell them who he really is.

Ari sighed, seeming to accept the situation. "I'm Ari," she said. "It's nice to meet you all...I guess."

She looked at their group's surroundings again. The glass dome dominating the skyline made her shudder. "So...where are we, anyway?"

Maya smiled uncomfortably. "I'm Maya...Maya Miter." she looked up at the swirly orange sky. "I'm not really sure where we are..." she turned her head toward the group. "But the energy crest should be close-by. After all, the coordinates on the teleporter were set to follow high-energy frequencies." She looked over to the dome in the distance. "Oh! Before I forget..." reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a metallic object resembling a fancy-looking pen. She raised it into the air and hit the trigger on the tip. A high-pitched, ear-splitting sound emanated from the object. "Ow..." Maya rubbed the side of her head. "We were lucky that the four of us speak a common language, but we don't know about this place. That sound changed the frequency of your vocal pattern, to put it simply. I think most of you wouldn't understand the technical aspects..." she smiled at Holden, "I'll explain it later if you want." She took a glance at the smoke in the distance. "Anyway, it looks like we have two choices...which way should we go first? Should we investigate the village, or should we check out that smoke over there? Both options leave me a little uneasy, honestly..."

The smoke probably means that something either happenend or is happening right now. Sky thought, not even bothering to ask about the voice changing pen. "I'd say we check out the village first."

He offered a half-hearted wave which was soon cut halfway when Maya drew out the pen-like...thing. Holden pressed his left hand against his ear, wincing when Maya used the device. "Is...that a compliment?" He said, referring to her smile. He would have done the same if it wasn't for the ringing in his ears. "I'll ask why you had to do that later." Holden stared over at the pillar of smoke. Surprisingly, not much came to mind. "I suppose if anyone's up for risking a possible lethal encounter then going towards that smoke would be my choice. Though there's nothing saying that going to a village on a world we've never been to before will be any less dangerous." He paused for a moment. "Hm...this isn't putting anyone at ease...is it?" Holden glanced over at Sky and shrugged. "Well that's two opinions."

    ((*uses Phoenix Down*))

Ari hummed lightly as she weighed the given options. As Holden said, neither was without its dangers...

"I'll vote for the village, too," she offered. "Odds are that while we're there, we'll find out something about the smoke, right?" She fiddled absently with her headphones--she had noticed that it was becoming a nervous habit.

"That makes two for the village." Sky said before looking back at the smoke again. We still have the option of splitting up and investingating both area's, but without any weapons or knowing what to expect we probably shouldn't. Moving his hand to the back of his head, he awaited for the others choice.
