I know they're not exactly the same but it's like rugby for whimps, they wear pads and in rugby they don't. Plus, Americans DID steal the name football, face the facts.

I can accept that different countries have changes. However you don't take into account that a verb form is a pretty big change. It almost counts as being a different language on its own. American English however, is minuscule changes that really don't need to be done, and have no real reason for being done. Why does colour need to be dirtied? Why must armour be dented? Defence deserved to be defended from that change.

The change is no where near the scale of the Spanish language, but it represents the start of it. The American language is slowly growing away from the Queen's English, and even worse, assimilating it. Harry Potter get's an American "translation" while I have to feel like a language slaughterer whenever I look at my Gameboy Color. Online, many Americans I speak to are surprised when I tell them that colour should have a U.

American football is just ridiculous. I now do not know the difference between football, American football and soccer! For lack of confusion, at least name it "protected rugby" or something. The comparison between Cricket and Baseball was unfair. If baseball were called American Cricket, then we may have justification of comparison, but as it stands, the two are separate sports because of the different names. Football however, has undergone name changes to hell and back, with ripoffs and Americanization.

This is why the topic creator has a right to rant. Americans are slowly destroying all English culture other than their own, and this is just one facet of it. So next time you're talking to someone online, have consideration that they may be English, and pay homage to the original words by spelling them correctly. Color and colour mean the same thing: why should those who speak British English learn both words, but Americans only learn their own?

    This thread is hilarious xD

Languages change by themselves through the course of time, so naturally they become different when spoken in different regions that are separated by thousands of miles. Hell, the same language spoken in the same country can have many differences, expressions, sometimes even the same word can mean different things, thanks to dozens of dialects.

OOOOOOOkay check this out. Just because you're British and British people were here first, they do not get exclusive copyrights to the words that are used in one of the most spoken languages on earth. If we want to get all historical, it's unavoidable that the British found the words first because America spawned from you. Just because we speak your language does not tie us to you culturally, so of course we are going to have different terms and definitions. We're not thinking up our own language because it's not that simple and you need to read up on the origin of languages. I feel like if you feel the need for there to be a difference so badly that you can think up of a new language, and I don't mean to group British people together with him.

We don't say American football btw, other countries do. We just say football. To answer your question... In England, there were two types of football: rugby football and association football. The slang term for rugby football was "rugger," and the slang for association football was "assoc." The word "assoc" gradually evolved into "soccer," which was much easier to say. When association football was introduced to North America, gridiron football (NFL) was already well established. To avoid confusion, we Americans adopted the British nickname "soccer" for the new sport.

Yes, because Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand English are totally identical to British English.

hey im american, i like to spell color like this: c-o-l-o-r
and i play football the way i was taught to
i also don't have European slang and i don't know really anything about the currency.

ok this thread is just like asking a kid to stop picking his nose. Its called habit and i really dont think we will stop talking the way we were taught to for generations

o yeah its just like the east (in America) telling the south "stop called Pop 'Soda'" since we also have different pronunciations of object, like my example with Pop or soda or whatever

unlike you, i accept the cultures of other countries and i dont yell at them "YOUR DOING IT WRONG" or "STOP STEALING THINGS FROM US!"

btw i find it incredibly insulting that because you believe you are some sort of superior being just because you are from europe

sadly this did not make sense ._.
