I can sort of skateboard. Playing the guitar is something I can't do.

And you're getting an electric...? Tell your family to buy earplugs. Electrics sound disgusting when played badly.

Actually, regardless of race or stereotypes or whatever, bass might actually be a good choice. I play both guitar and bass and IMO bass is easier. Less strings, almost no chords to worry about, and you can still use tabs and whatnot. Still pretty fun too, the issue is obviously if you were in a band or something you'd rarely get a big part (although in songs like Seven Nation Army you can, so it's not impossible or anything).

Mio may make bass seem attractive, but it doesn't seem to be my thing. I actually want to distinctively hear what I'm playing and bass is a bit too low for me, even with an amp.

Regardless of how much effort people think goes into playing bass guitar, it has a much more important role in music than many give it credit. Without bass, lead and rhythm guitar would feel almost flat. Bass adds depth to music, so learning it may come in handy if you plan on recording music in the future, though learning another type of guitar playing is still recommendable if someone else can play bass for you. Just go with what you enjoy more.

I see what you mean, that's why I wish I'd picked cello instead of violin when picking orchestra instruments, not too high but not too low >: ~

In that case, guitar really isn't that much harder. Chords are tough but once you get the basics down everything will become a LOT easier and tabs are EASY AS HELL.

Since you already skateboard (you did say you have before... Right?), you already know you enjoy that, but in all honesty you should go to a music store and hold a guitar and see what it's like before deciding. That's what I like to do, anyway. I don't know how many basses I held at a store before getting comfortable and deciding I'd go with it and which one I want (My guitars notsomuch, one was just a random buy and the other given to me. As a result I'm not entirely comfortable with them). If you go and end up not liking it much right off the bat, then get a skateboard first, and once you get a guitar at home later you can get into it more.

Well, a friend of mine has his bass guitar in my basement and I was messing around with it earlier and it was actually kind of fun.

They are quite fun <: . And really, the notes are only hard to identify on the lowest string. In my opinion, anyway.

But just in case, I still say go to your local music store and see if you like guitar too before you choose.

I've actually tried to learn but I sucked so badly. I had a lot of trouble moving from string to string and fret to fret because my fingers are so small and I was using a basic sized guitar. I've said it before, I'd love to be able to play an instrument but I haven't really found one just right for me. 3:
