The alien stares at you before dropping a note on the floor below your window.

He replies, "That was a test, and you failed. Regardless, there is much to do. Much to do." He then grabs you by the arm and starts walking into a random alley.

 

I suppose I should read the note. What does it say?

 

At first the lettering looks weird and indecipherable, but you soon are able to piece it together.

I can understand every language there ever was, read every language there ever was, and speak every language there ever was. Perfectly. I could crack out a book in Mandarin, and read it. Perfectly. The words flowing fluidly. My head a dictionary, figuratively, figuratively so as to not give you any ideas.

And in fact, that is just what I would do. Crack out a book, not in Mandarin but in Macedonian perhaps, and read it from start to finish. I have wanted to for some time now, and it will feel marvelous pummeling the Cyrillic alphabet. So easily. A master of it.

Or perhaps I would take a job in part time, a translator in Ohrid for the monoglot tour guide. I would translate for him, on the boat ride across lake Ohrid, translate for the stream of tourists.

Or perhaps I would travel to the Czech Republic and witness my very first marionette play, in Prague probably. The intimidating Czech language, with its seven grammatical cases, would no longer intimidate me. I would understand the plot, the monologues, the dialogues, the play.

But what ever I do, I would make for an impeccable translator. Let's start with something easy. I decide to read a book in Macedonian.

 

I gain the potential for infinite power but I must work for it. I would set to reaching it immediately and then use it to get the things that I want from the world, such as local anarchism.

 

NOOOOOOOOOO. I have fallen for the contract. -_- Welp since that's the case. I become god and enjoy watching the stupidity. While thinking on how to possibly cure some of the conflicts that sprout from that stupidity.

No, I'm in Canada.

I have the power to leap into shadows and come out anywhere and anywhen I desire, future excluded. The first thing I do with said power is go visit a friend in France three months ago.

 

"What the hell are you doing?"

I reluctantly follow, not having been left with much of a choice anyway, and consider my options. I can hear kids on the other side of the street pondering my situation as well, but their thoughts fade away as he takes me into the dark alley.

People within 5 km of you feel like bowing down to you whether they know it or not. People within 1 km of you feel like dying for you whether they know it or not. People within sight of you feel all three and cannot disobey you without preternatural force of will. If you deeply concentrate and focus your powers even weapons will not want to injure you, blades will dull, missiles will miss, and so on.

You are in Anytown, USA. Deal with it.

On your way through the void, you find your way blocked by a wall stretching farther than you can see.

Once you are out of sight of the street he says, "You are a magical girl, a Vehrmaecht, it is your job to change the world. You see that collar around your neck? That collar will tighten at the end of each day that the path of this world remains unchanged. If you fail to produce any change within thirty days it will become too tight for you to breathe easily and from there it can only be days until your demise. If you try to remove the collar it will instantly sever your head from your body. Do you understand?"

 

How do they treat the kidnapee? And how did I get from something as meager as reading an innocent novel to captured a kidnapee?

 

"Wait... what?"

I touch the collar on my neck, not even realizing that it was there until now. I think about what he's just told me, which honestly just sounds like the crap plot of some 1990's video game. I let that thought wander off, not even knowing where it came from at a time like this.

"But, that can't be right. Sure, I have telepathic powers, but they're limited. I can't read the minds of anyone past sixteen! How the hell am I supposed to save the world?"

 

I should have made my wish more clear. I will attain it if I work at it, as in, it is within my abilities. The work would be miserable if I got a reward like that.

 

They give you food and water. They don't physically abuse you. They simply leave you locked up most of the time and threaten you if you don't comply with their wishes.

He says, "Your problem, not mine kid. I just got done with my term of service. I lived out my youth as a girl dammit! I got hit on, by GUYS! You were always a girl right?" He doesn't wait for an answer and starts running off, oddly fast for such an old guy.
