Why do people eat popcorn at the movies?

I mean, seriously. It seems the trend has been around since the beginning of movie making. But what's so special about it?



I dunno, my mind comes up with odd questions from time to time.

 

Huh, so the Great Depression didn't put folk off going to the movies.

 

Yep. In all actuality, it pushed people to go to the cinema. Life was, well, depressing, and movies were a great form of escapism.

 

Because it's a snack and that's what people always at movies.

 

I know that feel.

 

Oooh. O.o that's kinda cool actually.

Tis like poor college kids investing in video games or Netflix. ;-; Escape from adulting.

It is a weird feel.

I read somewhere that South America was the first to make popcorn way back when. Like only special hard kernels could pop, not the regular corn. @-@

 

Because Jesus said in the bible that people should eat popcorn when going to the movies.

 

No clue. I personally hate popcorn and can only view it as edible styrofoam, which makes it seem that much worse for me

Movies back then were really, really cheap and technicolor had just become a more common practice.

 

If I recall King Kong was a big hit back in this time.

Personally, I enjoy eating popcorn based on the kind of movie I'm watching. If it's a romance or comedy flick I don't necessarily need to eat popcorn unless out of desire since I actually enjoy popcorn. When it comes to horror, action, or suspense flicks however, I get nervous for the character(s) and I feel the need to munch on something out of anticipation/anxiousness. (kinda like stress eating or mindless eating) I'm sure a lot of people are like that as well.

There's only one type of popcorn.

 

Perhaps they meant flavor-wise? There's salted/unsalted, buttery, extra butter, cookies n' cream, w/ M&M's, (white) cheddar, spicy, etc.

I have been meaning to try the cookies n' cream popcorn.
