better safe than sorry, besides, ny especially long island wasnt really built to expect hurricanes because it's such a rare occurrence. there was a film clip of a hurricane in ny from 1930 or something and the flooding was pretty bad. hopefully it doesn't get like that, but you know it's weather so it's not like anyone can control it.
as for me, i'm more central md, so ill prob get rain/wind but then again the most recent reports have the hurricane going right over where i live so idk how things'll turn out. my parents prepped everything so that's good.

tl;dr - it was nice of you to put this up, wolfie good luck to you too *3*

    ^ This.

I would have rather gotten all prepared and find out later that I didn't need to than not getting prepared and get injured or die.

I'd say keep up communication but what's really important is making sure you and loved ones are secure and safe. Material items can be replaced. Homes can be rebuilt. Human life isn't so easy to do the same with.

Now for some reason, I want to bake cookies.

This. I really don't think Irene's going to be all that bad. It's actually as I thought it would be. Windy and rainy. Albeit a little more windy and rainy than I thought it would be, but still. Also, Retz I thought you were banned.

The Northeast isn't built for hurricanes. Pretty much all the states on the seaboard are under a state of emergency. It's not a typical storm for this area, and given that there has been a good deal of rainfall over the past month the ground is extremely saturated, meaning that there's going to be a lot of uprooted trees and downed power lines. Parts of the area are low lands as well, especially near the shore so flooding will happen. Because of the new moon storm surges of at least ten feet are predicted, twenty foot waves, and winds of at least 60 and up to 90 mph.
When that tremor hit earlier this week pretty much all communication went down - internet, phone lines, 3G. With the threat of the hurricane that could be down for days.

There's no harm in taking a storm that's meant to be the worst we've had in decades "too seriously".
