I totally missed the part where bad grammar, poorly constructed dialect, dead obvious intent, stupid characters, racial stereotyping, and a boring plot was a good thing.

reminds me that I was continually called on to read the book out loud in class. I sounded like a ****ing racist.

Well Zora Neal Hurston was criticized by a lot of other authors for adding that dialect and grammar but she did it to make it more realistic, since at that time period people talked like that. The other stuff, well, I guess its a matter of opinion, lol. Not my favorite book but it was interesting to read.

She did it badly. If you look at the text, all of the characters sound the same. Mark Twain made clear and, in my opinion, more accurate distinctions between regional dialects and added realism rather than annoyance as was the case in this text.

Grammatically my biggest gripe was she would refuse to start new paragraphs when new people started talking and she carried on inconsistent fading in and out of dialect. Pick one and make it seem like you mean it not you were just being a lazy ass and doing whatever the hell.

Also, it is not an opinion that Janie was stupid. It is a fact. Running off with men you have known for hardly even a cumulative 24 hours is stupid. Blindly obeying a man who agrees to be called Tea Cake is stupid.

I can see liking the book, but not based on any technical merits.
