.....Why has everything started to sound really generic to me, all of a sudden?

 

Probably because it is and you are just now realizing it. If you can name at least five bands that are comparable to the one you are listening to in sound, then it is generic and probably is a style that bands start saying "I want to be that style of band" about. Like "I want to start a metalcore band" or some-such. It becomes a niche, a style that you can aspire to. It becomes cookie-cutout; "When we get these sounds and this tempo and rhythm, we'll be that kind of band."

Most people like a generic style of music in my experience.
