I read a lot compared to you. I've read probably a hundred novels, nearing on a thousand eastern comics, and at least a dozen or so western comics. Now, I read only a small amount compared to a lot of people I, personally, know. That's a big difference there, isn't it? Even the people I know who read the least have in the past read at least 2 or 3 novels for their own personal enjoyment and don't really have to force themselves or anything. They just don't more often because they prioritize other things more often. But me, I was introduced to novels before I could read because I was read to when I was younger, stuff like The Hobbit, those Narnia books, folklore anthologies, and various other things. So to me reading is like walking, I may have learned it at some point in my life but it's natural and I can't see not doing it. It doesn't make sense to me doing otherwise. So this, to me, is like you, at your age, just learning to walk, essentially. So I wonder what makes you like that?

I think it was more a study of personal history to find a reason as opposed to why aren't you like me.

I' m the same as Jiku. My dad read us books when we were todlers, he taught me how to read before school did, subscribed us to the local library and several magazines, and forbid TV after 9pm. So naturally I' ve read thousands of books.

I' ve had many friends who have never read any book for pleasure though (hell, one of them can barely read). Every book school ever threw at them was boring so they assumed reading is boring. I managed to convert a few of them though.

I barely read books anymore, just comics, but if I didn' t have the internet you can bet I would.

I mean, on the topic of novels and stuff, books were read to me as a kid, the couple chapters a night before bed type thing, my mom reads books all the time and I've had to read books for school. If environment and upbringing decide what I enjoy, I should love books. Not to mention I read comics like its my job. It's simply not a form of entertainment I enjoy.

Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. It came across to me more as a question than judgement.

I was rarely read to as a child and I'm an English major now. I don't think upbringing is necessarily a deciding factor. I don't get to read for leisure as I would like (between other obligations and mandatory school reading, which is often novels but I don't count them) nor have I read a long list of books (at least in my opinion). Instead I obsessively re-read things. Point is, everyone has a different relationship with reading and is at a different level. I don't think it's fair to compare.

I don't think being an English major actually reflects how much you enjoy reading or how much you read. In turn how many things you read isn't actually reflective of how much you enjoy either, it's why you read and how often you read, I feel.

It's totally fair to compare your own life experience and the effect it had on you to the life experiences of another. It's natural and normal, everyone compares themselves to others and it's not a bad thing. Also, clearly lost on most of you, was my point that while I was read to a lot it's the fact that I ended up reading a lot of those things on my own or at least knew these things as a result that mattered.

I feel like some of you are taking this as derision and negative judgement, which I guess you've come to expect of all people who simply don't understand others. Fair enough, it's not like you've ever wondered why someone thought the way they did, nope. But Nate pretty much nailed it, it's just a question and I'm just curious.

Well, I never was read to as a child, and hated reading in elementary school and such to the point I never did it and they often scolded me for that. I had a game controller in my hand at two years old, and was always watching movies and television. I think because I was always subject to stimulation, I never sought it out. Now that my obsessions are those same stimulations and I'm just used to visual and/or interactive entertainment, going to something like reading is hard for me.

    Does that answer your question?[DOUBLEPOST=1396758310][/DOUBLEPOST]
I can safely say that the second you asked your question in the manner you did, I did not take it with any sort of negativity. I did not feel judged or looked down upon, but rather felt someone wanted a different perspective. Sort of "How did I end up here and how did they end up there?"

I forgot to add that I feel my internet usage may even be a factor in why I don't read often. I've been frequenting forums since I was twelve, so I'm always reading forum posts, news, articles, wiki pages. whatever and that stuff feels like work to me. So maybe that's also had an effect. When I play games, I super seclude myself away from the internet and all things so perhaps that's why I chose to play games instead of read.

It's probably as good an answer as you'll ever have, so I think it'll be fine. I also hated reading in elementary school, though. It was always dull and slow. I also played video games from a young age and watched a lot of television but there are probably two main differences between me and you here. I started with fighting games, I could only play as long as there was someone to play against and I didn't have cable until I was in my teens. So the way I played games and the shows I watched were probably very different. I could go one about the differences that may exist but in the end I think it's safe to say that you were used to pure sensory input and direct interaction where I wasn't.

When it comes to the internet, that actually opened up a whole new world of reading for me in comics and manga. I hadn't read any before I started getting internet access, but now it's one of the main things I do online.

just finished adventure time season five AAAAH SUCH A GREAT SEASON and s6 starts in a few weeks. can. not. wait.

This is tough. I've never seen a movie that defied my expectations as much as Winter Soldier. There were things I expected to happen that didn't happen, things I did not expect to happen that happened, and things I thought the movie was telling me were happening that didn't happen. Because of this, the experience I had watching the movie was a little junked up. I would need to see it again knowing what the movie is actually doing to be able to decide how much I like it, but objectively I will say that it's good. very good. The main points of contention I have with the movie concern how this affects the future of the MCU. The movie does some incredibly bold things that I never expected to happen here. Basically what I'm saying is my fanboy shock is preventing me from deciding to what degree I like this. I'm not saying my opinion of this movie hinges on everything that comes after, but I need to see how the MCU reacts to the events of this movie before I decide. So for now I'm just going to say "It's good" and "I like it". Though maybe after I've had time to digest this movie I'll be able to give a better answer? clearly my thoughts on this one are less than organized. i'm still taken aback by it all
