so like, theoretically if I have a regular 3ds there may be games I can't play on it (only the new one) because of the different buttons?
and yeah my boyfriend has x and y and I really want to try the new games. the most recent one I played was soul silver

i dont know the specifics but i know they work around it. there are supposed to be new 3ds exclusives, though i only know of that one xenoblade game, and 3ds games that have come out after the new 3ds (like majoras mask 3d, i believe) has an optional control layout that integrates the 2nd analog stick. im maybe not the person to be answering these questions since i dont really know, but if pokemon is what you want to play you prob wont ever have to have the new 3ds. theres pretty much no way they would make sun and moon new-exclusive and i would wager those are the last 3ds pokemon games that will come out (fingers crossed for z though).

Literally the only game I know of that's exclusive to the New 3DS is the port of Xenoblade Chronicles. Everything else is compatible.
X and Y are honestly the best Pokemon games for both newcomers and people who haven't been with the series in a while. Stuff like EXP Share, getting two Starters to balance your team out more quickly, Super Training to control your Pokemon's stats and Friendship a lot better, being automatically asked if you want to use another Repel when one runs out, etc. ORAS are basically the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games with the XY mechanics and graphics.

I looked up New exclusives and the only other title is Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

I assume the reason for barely any exclusives is that there just haven't been enough adopters of the New model over the non-New. Making too many exclusives could easily lose out sales, especially if people buy those exclusives but don't have the New system and then feel burned (which would of course be totally their fault but Nintendo's bad name for the upgraded system does not help.)

This is basically comparable to the DSi situation, even though the New 3DS is a far better upgrade.

The New 3DS also has SNES Virtual Console games as exclusives, in addition to Xenoblade and The Binding of Isaac. Most, if not all 3DS games that made use of the Circle Pad Pro accessory (including Dream Drop Distance!) can also make use of the extra circle pad on the New 3DS.

Also agreed that XY would be the best starting point for getting back into Pokemon.

Don't forget to trawl the eShop for free game demos! That's how I found Etrian Odyssey, which has rocketed to one of my top favorite game series. :3c

@61 Sun and Moon are already confirmed for all 3DS systems~

I have emulators on my computer and a hacked PSP I never use I don't really intend to use the virtual console thing. tbh I'm not much of a mobile gamer. I just want to play Pokemon and maybe some New Leaf.

Hyrule Warriors Legends is also N3DS exclusive.

Overall I'd recommend the New 3DS XL simply because wifi stuff aka the social aspect of Pokemon loads faster on it. Comparing my N3DS to the older one, trading goes smoother for me and it actually doesn't have frame rate drop in team battles on Pokémon, which the old 3DS does. It's maybe just me but the frame rate drop is seriously gross and takes away from the experience.

False. It can only use 3D effects on the New 3DS, though, and it certainly runs better.

Really? In the Nintendo Direct last week I could have sworn it said "New 3DS Exclusive" on the bottom of the screen.

so i thought nuns4 was a pretty shallow button masher that required nothing to be good at then i played an online match and did not hit the other guy once

NUNS4 is such a unique acronym.

But yeah the game's AI is pretty laughable compared to someone who's played the series for at least a moderate amount of time.

I've played previous NUNS games a bit, but mainly just the Versus stuff. This one I've so far only watched like half of the Story Mode as friends and my brother played it, but I did beat one of them. They used Sasuke; I used Konohamaru

this is my first storm game. i played the first three un's on ps2 and i think its interesting how the basic combo controls have carried over
also think its cool how this series is analogous to the budokai series
    un = budokai = 2d fighter
    un storm = b tenkaichi = 3d fighter
i wish the combat in this game was a little more in-depth but like i said, this is how its been from the beginning so its more of a complaint with the series than the game itself. and not even a huge criticism. i think its maybe wrong to expect too much from an anime game but still it would be nice if there were more than 3 combos or if they werent the same for each character

The issue with making anime fighting games is that if you go too far into deep mechanics, it's gonna become a true fighting game, and that means that casuals will drop the game very quickly out of frustration due to how hard it can be to get decent at a true fighting game (I've experienced this firsthand.)

Anime games like NUNS tread the line so that people who just like Naruto can enjoy it without feeling too overwhelmed, and people who do want some depth can still enjoy it.

yeah i understand that but would it still not be possible to find a balance? like the budokai series. im not a huge fan of those because of this and when i play dbz i want to play something that emulates dbz combat which is just insane action but with naruto you could get away with those sort of mechanics because its not as fast-paced. i agree with you but i still think you could take it one or two steps farther before becoming full-on fighting game which im not a fan of

I prefer the Budokai games to Tenkaichi, simply because I feel like the Tenkaichi games lack much depth at all and the characters felt samey to me; the NUNS games achieve a far better balance to me, and Budokai 3 could be a decent fighter on its own without the DBZ IP on it. I'm not sure what else could be done with NUNS though that wouldn't require some major re-hauling. Tacking out the teleportation would make it more fair but less Naruto. Changing some of the supers' hitboxes and tracking would make it more fair but less faithful.

by the time you get to bt3 i think there's a little more depth then the series is often given credit for, but yeah you're right on all of that. its just about finding a balance of good game and good anime emulation and budokai prioritizes good game while bt prioritizes emulation. un is somewhere in the middle, though if im being totally fair the storm games have slightly better combat than the original un's despite how similar they are. that said, un3 has so much damn content in the game. one of my favorite games for sure. considering how good storm 4 did i would love a remaster of the first 3 on ps4 with online.
also un impact is a wonderful little handheld naruto musou-style game on psp. been playing the heck out of that. and un heroes is, gameplay-wise, literally just un on psp. it is also great. love the un franchise. can't wait for whatever comes of this ultimate ninja blazing thing we got word of.

totally unrelated but something ive been meaning to ask you. have you played tf devastation?
