Retail's starting to give me bad dreams. It was pretty much myself and another cashier working a closing shift before some holiday or other. And it had gone past when we normally close but people just kept coming. No matter how fast we checked people out, the line never ended. And I couldn't see my register screen because there were no lights on... [ probably to dissuade people from coming in] . And almost every person had overflowing trolleys.

It was enough to make me legit terrified to go into work yesterday. But luckily it was extremely slow.

So the shortlist of movies eligible to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated picture is out and I love how we pretend every year like it'll mean something. I can tell you right now what the five nominees will be:
    • Inside Out (Disney/Pixar) - It's Disney/Pixar.
    • The Good Dinosaur (Disney/Pixar) - It's Disney/Pixar.
    • Minions (Universal) - Popular and financially successful.
    • The Peanuts Movie (20th Century Fox) - It's Peanuts.
    • When Marnie Was There (Studio Ghibli) - Conveniently fills the obligatory Ghibli movie AND obligatory foreign movie slots.
And of course, the winner will be Inside Out. Not that it's an undeserving movie; it has rave critical reviews and is being hailed as Pixar's greatest. (disclaimer: i've not yet seen it myself) But how much of the reasoning will be its merits as opposed to "It's by Disney/Pixar and it's popular"? The Academy has shown before that it just doesn't care about the animation category. And that kills me.

EDIT: I shared this on Facebook and a friend put out a similar list:
    • Anomalisa
    • The Good Dinosaur
    • Inside Out
    • Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet
    • When Marnie Was There

Inside Out deserves it this time. Easily one of Pixar's best. 2015 was a weak year for animation outside of Disney.

Last year and the year was the main time where other studios got snuffed.

I think I made a post somewhere that I'm too lazy to look for that gave certain facts about "The Academy". But the post boiled down that the Academy was pretty much exclusively made up of old white men with an average age of about 65. 65 year old men aren't really 'in the know' about animation...apart from watching it with grandchildren. And at that point it's a means to keep children entertained, thus 'low brow entertainment'.

And I'm convinced there's a Disney/Pixar bias because that's what these men know. They grew up with Disney entertainment. [ I think everyone did to some degree. ] It's a household name. They hear 'animation' they're going to think of the Mouse.

i made a post re: animation a while back, myself, as well. Just a link.

I swear there is a related article out there somewhere about the people that make up the Academy & iirc it's exactly what you describe.

EDIT: Wow ok the post you are referring to was part of the same discussion haha. I found it on the same page!

So I'm at work (a sandwich shop), when a girl opens the door with her dog in her arms and says
"On a scale of one to ten, how okay would it be if I brought my dog in for about five minutes?"
"Unless it's a service animal, not okay at all? Sorry."
"Can he be a service animal for, like, five minutes while I order?"

    ...uhhh no, ****. It's a restaurant.

I did it. I watched No One Lives yesterday. Pretty much only went into it just for Luke Evans. And for it being a blood soaked gore fest, I kind of liked it? And found myself laughing at some parts? [ Though during filming Luke says that 'the darker the scene, the more I laughed' ] I don't know. Maybe it's a defense mechanism.

Some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy but it works to balance out the dark and gruesome stuff.
'College girls. They think they got it all figured out.'
*Deadpan voice* 'This man stole my wallet. Stop. Thief.'

I've had some weird experiences with animals in the store where I work. One time a bird flew in and the customers were panicking because there's like, this tiny little bird that's just as scared and wants to go back outside.

But one time I was checking out and this lady comes in wearing a jacket with her arms like wrapped around her. And she asks if we have any baby formula. So I tell her where the baby food is. So she tells this guy with her and then I see this tiny puppy in her coat.

I kind of tell her that animals aren't allowed in the store because it's a health code violation. And that the only animals allowed were service animals of which this wasn't one because it couldn't be more than a month old.

'But it's not in the store. It's in my coat.'

And at that point, I'm just like: 'i'm not paid enough for this'

So I decided since I was bored out of my mind that I would buy Knight of the Old Republic on steam. And as much as I love this game it's glitches are a friggin nightmare. The Xbox ran this game better. Maybe it's because of my OS but still.

Anyway, I've been having a grand ol' time with it but there are always worlds I just groan at when I have to go back to them. And I'm back at Manaan. The only good thing about this world is that there are a lot more ethical decisions brought up here that are subtle as opposed to going to Korriban and getting a Sith speech or Dantooine and getting a jedi speech.

But everything changes when I have to walk slowly underwater in a diver suit. I get so bored I am almost lulled to sleep by it.
