At my job my hours were cut because I was feeling a bit sick and was hurting so bad I could barely stand, I was dizzy, and I was close to puking, but my manager thought I just didn't want to work, so she cut me from Wednesdays, and Sundays I work 10-5 as opposed to 9-6 like I usually do.

Yeah I'm not usually the most amazing worker and I can slack (not even like I try to stand around doing nothing, one can only straighten batteries SOOOOO MANY TIMES in 8 hours when you're at the cash register and can't leave and they never let me off to go do something else), but I've been there a goddamn year and I know my stuff, but if you'd rather have a kid that barely started and is planning o quitting by the end of the month, let me know how that goes.

Also why does my manager have a compelling need to tell my dad I'm slacking? My dad has told her to just fire me if I'm a problem and I agree, honestly. I don't WANT to lose my job (who am I kidding though, I hate my job and would leave if I could find a new one), but if someone is an issue you get rid of them.

Also why should I have to be the one there to close EVERY NIGHT if someone else is gonna have the keys and the combination to the safe? Like... Seriously. I could be getting off at 5 every day to do stuff I need to do instead of standing around doing nothing and getting told I'm slacking when no one tells me to do anything and I can't just walk to the other side of the store :/

Are we bitching about work? Also, Bueno, that really sucks. I hope things get better.
At the restaurant that I work at, I'm basically the only server. Like literally. There are others, but I work 6 days a week and more often than not, I also work the 7th. We are ridiculously short staffed right now and everyone keeps deciding that they don't want to work, so I end up staying several hours late most days. I typically work until 2 or 4, depending on the day. My husband has irregular end of day hours, so I have to be done by 5 because he could call anywhere between 4 and 9 to say that he's done with work and needs to be picked up (we only have one vehicle), but lately I keep having to stay until whenever he calls, so I work from 10:30-8 or something like that. I've been coming in on my days off, like today -- I got a call at 4 asking if I could come in to work 4-9 and said that I would need a ride in order to do so. My boss picked me up -- and I work a lot of split shifts. I have my 10:30-2 or 4 and then I leave and come back to work 5-9 or something because we're short servers. Right now, I am literally the only person for Saturdays. There is no one to work the night shift whatsoever and I have no backup server for lunch. Last Saturday I had already done over 80 lunches by 2 o'clock, by myself. Which is the most I have ever done solo and our bartender decided she wasn't going to work that weekend so I didn't even have their help. Everyone else can just take days off or call in sick or whatever they want and I have to jump through hoops and make arrangements more than a month in advance in order to take time off. (I have a convention at the end of next month and it's my husband's birthday weekend so I had to find people to work for me and get it on paper this week so that they couldn't back out.)

Honestly, I don't understand people. They say they want jobs, but then do whatever they feel like and never work. We hired three new people in the last 2 weeks. The first one worked one two-hour shift and never came back. The other two never even showed up on the first day. I constantly feel like I am the only person that takes work seriously and wants to not be fired for being a lazy piece of shit. I hate people. All I wish for is everyone to get their act together and do their job if they want to be employed. I don't understand people that apply to a place saying they want to work and then do everything they can to get out of it. You're better off just quitting because all you're doing is fucking over everyone else by claiming to still work their.

I had this same thought last night. Why the fudge would you apply to a job, keep saying you need money for whatever, and then do whatever you can to not work? I realize like 2/3s of the cashiers where I work are teenagers who have seemingly no concept how the actual world works. And have no concept of when you don't show up to your shift for whatever reason, that you're screwing someone else over. You want time off so you can be in the school play? Great. Make sure you got someone to cover for you. Don't just take for granted that someone's going to step up to the plate because someone's going to get scheduled to cover for you.

We had one cashier who recently quit. And most of the cashiers just kind of sit on the registers playing on their phones ( They don't clean. They don't straighten anything. They don't stock the soda cooler up front. They can do homework if they want. ) Anyway, this girl kept saying she was looking for other jobs which was fine. She worked at a printing place for 1 day and then quit because they made her do actual work.

And she kept working for us because she needed money for car payments. ( She had gotten a car for her boyfriend but her name was on the information. So if said boyfriend got in an accident, she'd be liable to pay the damages. wtf?) She bounced a check with us, which okay, things happen. When it came to the second check being bounced, she started to avoid the managers, okay, you're embarrassed. But fess up and deal with it. These people will bend over backwards to help you. You want more hours? That can be arranged.

Well, she was offered more hours and either said she couldn't work them or didn't want to work them. Which is also wtf? You say you need money, are offered hours to get money, and then refuse the hours?

It eventually came to the point where she couldn't put in her 2 week notice because she 'couldn't afford the gas to drive in to do so.' And this is after she'd missed two of her shifts two weeks in a row which I had to cover for her. Since there was no other option at the time.

And we had hired someone after this. She went through training. She had experience. She seemed like a shoe-in. She worked one 4 hour shift and then stopped coming. She was 7 months pregnant which really, no one's going to hire someone that cannot work one of the busiest retail seasons ever because she's going to have a baby. But the owner of where I work wanted to give her a chance because he's nice like that.

These past few months have been really stressful and I really am amazed I've made it through it. I mean, I've been used to having to take shifts no one else wants to work and I know it's more money for me in the end that I can use for holiday shopping or whatever. It's just the feeling of always being made to pick the short straw that I don't like.

Thanks guys. It makes me feel better that I'm not alone in this. Sometimes retail employees just have to rant.

My work schedule for the next 9 days:

    Saturday: 8:30am-5pm
    Sunday: 8:30am-5pm
    Monday: 4:30pm-9pm
    Tuesday: 8am-12pm
    Wednesday: 4:30pm-9pm
    Thursday: 8am-1pm
    Friday: 1pm-5pm
    Saturday: 8:30am-5pm
    Sunday: 8:30am-5pm

I'm only supposed to work 16h per week! I also have other commitments, such as participating in a university study (where I'm a guinea pig) and volunteering. I'm just lucky that it's half term/autumn break so I don't have to attend university or go to my night classes next week.

Took the day off from college to go with my mom to Issaquah for one of her prep appointments for her hip surgery in early November. It was a nice drive, except for the idiot drivers here and there.

No. Should let it be out for a while so most of the bugs are worked out.

Got it on my laptop. It's ok, but I hate that it undid my Start Menu program list. Other than that, I like how dragging windows around looks now.

I strongly prefer 7 for now, but once 10's wrinkles get worked out, I'm sure the new pros will outweigh the cons.

I'm getting Windows 10 even though my reservation still isn't in. I'll do it myself damn it.
Though I'm waiting another couple of weeks....specifically until I have time off. Plan on revamping my whole system.

I like 8.1, also on my laptop. I have it set to basically be just a slightly quicker 7. I honestly can't tell the difference beside some visuals, though I definitely don't use all of the features unique to 8.

I've read some things about windows 10 that are mildly concerning.

The second link essentially says that a parent will be able to know what their child is doing on line. Which is great in the event of having a family computer or something. But consider that said child is lgbtqa+ and isn't out yet because they're afraid what their parents will think. When the parent sees what their child is researching, perhaps looking for similar experiences or advice on how to come out to parents and then the parents overreact.

It's a hypothetical but very real scenario that could become more likely with this feature. I realize you guys probably all have your own computers.

The third link is pretty much an open letter from Mozilla to Microsoft about how Windows 10 essentially disregards the personal preference of having Firefox as the default browser and replaces it with IE.

The first link is pretty much how Microsoft can see your location, listen through your microphone, see your keystrokes, and know your browser history by default. Apparently it can be turned off but that it's by default is kind of worrying. Since this is stuff that spyware and similar programs are capable of.

I don't have a PC or Windows so I can't know if this is real or not but I just want you guys to be aware.

The browser preference has never affected me. Still use Firefox by default.

The privacy things are all in the installation settings, and I believe can be changed later.

The one thing that annoys me, but totally makes sense, is Cortana and the privacy settings on that to even use it.

The parental spying thing can be toggled during installation. I understand people's concerns over it but, firstly, most kids have their own PCs from a young age today and probably can turn off any tracking so long as they're aware of its existence. Secondly, if a parent wants to spy on their child's online activity, many of them install other Nanny programs that do things like block sites, disable their internet connection after a certain hour, close ports, and so on. Windows 10's tools are much more passive. I don't agree with parents spying on their kids' online activity (monitoring is one thing, snooping is another) but I think it's a larger issue independent of Windows 10. Definitely something to be aware of but it shouldn't prevent most people, especially those in the age group of the people on this site, from upgrading.

The Cortana stuff iirc has to be turned on manually, I didn't want to use a Microsoft account with my OS and so Cortana is disabled for me. I agree with Haya that it's weird that Cortana is so all or nothing -- I don't think you can use her web search abilities, for example, without giving her access to your location, which is bizarre.

As for the browser thing, I clean installed W10 on a new PC so idk how the upgrade process works (or doesn't work as it were). Microsoft did get in trouble a few years ago for forcing IE on people though.

Yeah, I was annoyed by that. My friend who might as well be a spokesman for Microsoft wanted me to try Cortana when he had a weekend back from the Marines, but when I saw the privacy stuff involved, I was like "ehhhhhhhhh." I'm sure it won't matter since I mainly use my laptop for school work and some light gaming, but still.

I upgraded my laptop from 8.1 to 10 and it was basically an upgrade. All my files were kept in the right places, just some files like movies and music had the default programs changed. Takes like five seconds to change them back.

Also, since Directx12 is gonna need Windows 10, I will eventually upgrade my desktop. For now I'm just holding off until the last moment or until I can clearly find all the other advantages. I just love 7 so far.

This kind of technology has been around for ages, if anything Microsoft is just being more transparent about it being there. My reasoning for not upgrading is because I find no reason to. Windows 7 is ridiculously stable, and that is something that is essential to me. I am sure 10 is fine, or even 8.1, but I see no point in upgrading.
