I wish I had watched Ghost in the Shell when I was still in my philosophy class.
I should track down my old philosophy professor and talk to him about it. He was also the head of the anime and film clubs so I'm sure he eats this stuff up. It may have come up in one of his lectures, actually.

Me & friends celebrated the last day of classes by going out to Taco Bell, a frozen yogurt place, and then ordering calzones while watching High School Musical (within the span of 3 hours). My stomach bouta turn up in the morning but idc, tonight was great.

Seriously, the most we've gotten was that part in The Dark Knight where he was trying to figure out stuff about bullets, but even that wasn't exactly detective work.

So I got my girlfriend a Wii U for Christmas. Already gave it to her last night in case I have to work Christmas. It came with Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land, of course. Her sister's boyfriend pretty much crapped himself over it and bought Smash for it (So theoretically, I have Smash when I visit?). Anyway, it's pretty cool and fun so far. It's HER present, butnow I need to get her away with it so I can figure out all of its features and things.

Legend says Mamoru Oshii was livid when he saw the Matrix. Gee I wonder why. ^^
What few I' ve read of the manga was an even bigger headache, but it often had its head way up its own ass (when it wasn' t too busy showing you one).

I liked Avalon too, in spite of its neurasthenic pace.

I didn't particularly like the movie. Have about the same opinion of it as I do Akira, though I liked Ghost more than Akira.
The philosophical questions of existence and humanity were prevalent and interesting at times, but not enough to carry the whole movie or make it's lack of real characters excusable. The only substance the movie had was those philosophical questions, but it didn't explore them so much as present them, and what it presented wasn't incredibly unique. I think the film could have benefited from another 20-30 minutes to flesh out some of the non-entities called characters and explore the ideas present. Not to mention make more explicit the science of the setting.

I feel like Metropolis (anime) is everything these two movies are but better. It has similar themes to Ghost and animation rivaling (in my opinion, surpassing) Akira, all while having coherent story and characters.

I think that was the whole point : they don' t know who they are and the second they think they do they second guess their persona' s origins.
Have you watched the sequel too ? I thought it was just as good.
I liked Metropolis but to be honest I' ve forgotten most of it.
