You mentioned soul eater. It seemed appropriate in both cases.

I got called 'hun' and 'sweetheart' today at work. Both by older men.

    I feel so violated.

I was at work. Doing my job. They could have easily called me, 'Ma'am'. Heck, I would have accepted 'Miss'. But they chose the pet names. I don't know them beyond work.

There's a whole rant about retail workers being dehumanized and women being treated with respect in the workplace that I could type up but don't really feel like it at the present moment.

maybe they were just trying to be nice
ive never heard of sweatheart being used to destroy a person's humanity. that's absurd.
whenever i get called that it makes me feel happy

Basically that. No offense at all, you're cool to me, but in this case I think you're over dramatic. It's just being nice; no need to call it "dehumanization."

usually when I hear the word 'sweetheart', it's because I'm being catcalled when I'm out riding my bike or out taking my nephew for a walk. Are those men trying to be nice too? Am I being over dramatic because I associate pet names with being put into an uncomfortable situation?

yeah, i ignore it when it happens, but it kind of sticks with you after the fact.

At least that's not as bad as what one of my disrespectful friends did when I was still taking my disrespectful friends to lunch. We had just exited the school parking a lot, and I was driving past a woman walking down the sidebar coming toward us, and he yelled, "Nice ass! I'd **** you!"

I immediately slammed on my brakes in the middle of the road and pulled over suddenly with no signal. I was that pissed off and told him to turn around, sit down, roll up the window, and put his seat belt on (I can't remember if it was already on). He was in the back.

Do you know that every person making these remarks holds less-than-pure intent? No. So why let it matter to you so much? You're making it sound like you suspect every person, specifically male now, as someone untrustworthy, simply on the basis of a pet name. Think how bitter that is. It's making a mountain out of an anthill.

What if someone is genuinely just wanting to be nice to you? Are they not allowed to say "hun"?
