Yeah, that's usually how resale works. I mean, if there's enough of a market for it, people will buy anything. The seller's goal is to turn a profit. The customer's goal is to fill some void.

Where are you that gas is always $3.00 a gallon? I'm pretty sure there are some places up here that are pretty darn close to $5 a gallon.

But... more people use gas in the Winter for heating. That's why they can lower the price because they don't have that profit option in Summer....

"let's say that, regardless of the season, gas is always $3.00 a gallon"

But...how can you exclude those factors that change the season and thus the price? Do you live in space?

Amaury, the basic explanation here is that there are a limited amount of a certain Thing in this world. Despite whatever it retailed for originally or what you personally feel it's worth, some people are willing to pay $500 for the Thing. The price of an item is arbitrary. There's no inherent value in any product in this world that determines that it is worth x amount of money, because money is artificial and so are economics and where was I going with this

    okay let's try to refocus
There's an action figure out there that I really want. Currently, it can be had for about $450. When it came out, it was significantly less than that ($80 I think). Now of course, I'd love to buy it for $80. But the figure only had a few (relatively) copies made. Everyone out there who bought it when it came out, and are selling it now, a) want to make a profit if possible and b) know that they own something that not many people do. Therefore, the price of the item goes up. If there was no demand for the item -- i.e. no one wanted to buy it -- they would only be able to sell it for something like $20. Because people do want to buy it, they'll pay more than it was originally priced.

Think of it like real estate. Let's say your house is valued at $250k, based on the size of the house, the acreage, and the condition of the home. However, your house is in a highly sought after neighborhood. Because of that demand for the neighborhood, people will pay more than ticket price -- likely after a bidding war that drives the price up -- because there aren't many homes available in the area and they really want this one. They pay more than the house itself is worth.

You might see this all as crazy and paying way too much money but that's based on personal preference. To some people, paying upwards for $400 for something that originally sold for $80 is crazy. But people have their reasons for doing so, and in a capitalist economic system, that's how it works.

    You explained it perfectly.

Yes, for me personally, I just think it's crazy. Using my example again, even though there are still plenty of copies left, if I lost or damaged my Dragon Quest VIII disc and needed another and found only one in existence that was, hell, $800, despite how much I really like and want the game, I guess I'd just give it up.

I don't see how Misty's explanation was any more clear than Atlas's or Laurence's (no bias) but whatever, long as you get it mate.

Maybe it's just that you can't get into the mindset of a collector? That's totally fine.

In my case, it wasn't so much the "baby language," you just expanded more, I guess.

I dunno. I'm just like this a lot. I'll understand some people, but not others, even if they're explaining the same things.

i was sitting reading something yesterday and looked up and realized classes start in 2 weeks. what how is that even
but then i think back to what i was doing when i got out three months ago and that seems like a lifetime ago. ngl this summer has been very stressful and just not good. im excited to go back. get some semblance of normality and structure in my life.

you start college this year, right? Don't be so sure. I don't dread going to school like I did in hs. Part of me enjoys it. Yeah, there are still times when I want nothing more than to say **** school and sleep all day, but on the whole it's a nice experience and I'm excited to continue.

    yep. freshmeat v2.0
i've heard from pretty much everyone i've asked that college is supposed to just be better generally, and i've already visited the campus a couple of times to get books + get acquainted with the general layout of the place, but it's hard to get excited when you have precalculus at 9 three times a week
