i want to hear more on this because it seems like most people who like gundam are either indifferent to it or dislike it.

Okay, so 00 is good. Well, S1 is good. S2 is alright but feels kinda sloppy and shittily paced with all of the sub plots and side characters and the conga line of your usefulness has ended with alpha bitch and red bitch and Anakin. But Awakening the Trailblazer just made me feel like, "Why?" The premise, while I admit was mentioned in the original work, just felt forced. The implication was that they didn't know when the aliens were coming, having them appear so soon after the events of the series seems kinda lame to start with. Then the aliens actually show up and they're pretty cool aliens but they only end up doing lame things and making for some really boring space combat. Then the ending was actually just the worst. The whole going to the alien homework and flowers thing was the most contrived nonsense possible. I get where they were going with it and the communication theme, but come on, try harder. Summarily, it just felt really sloppy and thrown together like, "We need to get SOMETHING... scratch that, ANYTHING, on paper so we can start animating, guys."

If I were to dissect it further I'd have to have fewer than four years between me an my only viewing of this film, but in the end it felt like Sci Fantasy not Sci Fi and they really just didn't do anything of note with the characters or the universe as a whole. It was just bad on all fronts.

My 00 is super rusty. I haven't watched it in years so I can't even comment on it aside from that I remember liking s1 so much more.
Here's my thing with Awakening. For me, it's kind of the anti-war Gundam story to end all anti-war Gundam stories. I never need another one after this. I'm not going to comment on it's relationship to the parent story because I don't know the parent story well enough to say anything with confidence, but I've heard people say that it's a terrible conclusion to 00, which, yeah I can see that. However I think as a stand-alone movie, it works wonderfully (conceptually, that is). Gundam's thing has always been preaching understanding and communication as a means to an end rather than war, and I think when you add aliens to the mix after there never being aliens for 30 years, it immediately becomes more interesting and this is by far my favorite way that Gundam has approached this. I love the idea that these aliens are basically just trying to reach out and hug people but the humans mistake it for a threat and thus the whole movie is about communication, making the "why can't we just understand each other" trope that Gundam has done to death feel a little less contrived and a little more unique because the reason is THEY'RE ****ING ALIENS. It's anything but a traditional Gundam story, and all the better for it. I think when this movie is viewed without any context of the setting it's in and the history surrounding it, it immediately becomes much better.
and yeah, the combat is kinda boring. Though I think all Gundam space combat is somewhat boring, so this seemed to be in line with that. I much prefer when they're on land.

so, as much as I like one piece, it's refusal to kill anybody bugs me a little
now, this is a light-hearted story and I don't want all of the people that should die to actually die, but there are times where it goes to absurd lengths to make sure that no one dies

I refuse to believe that Caesar, the guy who kidnapped children and experimented on them knowing that the experiments would kill them, blew up an entire populated island out of spite, and poisons his own subordinates would let there be a cure or way to reverse this supposed ultimate chemical weapon. It really undercuts how evil this guy is and how dark this arc was, which were two of the few things I liked about this arc.

Eh, I get that you like the message, but it's a Macross message. Macross goes over humans and aliens not understanding each other then bonding over something that allows them to communicate in at least 2-3 of its iterations. So that's one thing that makes me not think, "Wow, this is interesting," but, "Wow, what a rip off." But Gundam has always been a very human series about humans and human dealings and I like that about it because there's a lot you can say and do with humans and a lot that has been said and done with humans. I also feel liek you've watched more Gundam than I have and less other anime so it doesn't feel as unoriginal and sloppy as it does when you compare it to standard Gundam as when you compare it to other series. I also think that you should never look at a movie like this as a stand alone because you're giving the writers a free pass to be bad writers.

I feel like the space combat is more interesting to some people than others because they really do carry over a lot of the same almost realistic tactical scenarios from their ground warfare to their space warfare even if it doesn't always look as cool as all that. But Awakening the Trailblazer was literally just them shooting wildly a lot.

I know literally nothing about Macross except that Jetfire from G1 was just a Macross toy with an Autobot logo on it.
Yeah I get that, it's just refreshing for me to get something that at least attempts to break the mold in some ways. I don't think adding aliens immediately makes it not about humans, given that it's about human misinterpretation and still very much commentating on the human experience in doing this. But I get that it's not what you want from Gundam in that respect. That's cool. What someone has seen will pretty much always affect how well something is received. If I had seen Macross before this I may have a similar opinion as you do. I mean, yeah, you shouldn't. But if it's just for your personal enjoyment, as long as you recognize that those problems are present and the material is worse when you don't ignore them, I don't have a problem with ignoring context. Unless the context is absolutely critical to the movie and it doesn't work without it, which I do not think is the case here. Though it's not a problem for me because I like it regardless.

I like when the ms's have a sense of weight and you don't get that in space. I also think guns with bullets are more fun to watch than guns with lasers (generally). And maybe it doesn't help that Seed, being my first series, cut so many corners with stock footage that not a single fight was distinguishable from another at times in space, tainting my view of space battles. just a guess. Basically what I'm saying is 08th ms team is ****ing gorgeous.

Macross is like Gundam but with aliens and music. It's a part of the transforming robot genre and get turned into Robotech the first time it was dubbed. I dunno, I know it's a taste thing because I consider it probably the worst animated film I've ever seen but I sorta get what you're saying with it.

Seed and Wing had the lowest overall production values of the series I've finished. So much reused footage. 08th MS team was a departure from Gundam in some ways because it didn't focus entirely on a team of ace pilots and thus had a kinda grittier and more down to earth feel. With space combat you kinda have to know that they won't be as encumbered by their mass as on the ground but a good amount of the 3D motion and stabilization are handled decently well in Gundam which makes me like their space combat. But then again, there are times when it's straight terrible too.

that's funny. not even in a "you gotta be kidding me" funny, i just find that amusing given my take

Space can be cool too but from what I've seen it takes much more effort to not look like boring shit. idk

I don't watch a lot of animated movies, sir.

I mean yeah, but I would enjoy an accurate submarine battle just for its accuracy so...

The market for the antidote is usually bigger than that of the virus. And although, if memory serves, he' s already immune to it, if his next team was to be targeted somehow it could hinder his plans. Besides, he' s a prideful scientist. If there was a way to make an antidote he' d want to know. Or better yet, make it himself.
