So I got to watching the recent blu-ray double feature I got a few days ago, which contained Godzilla: Tokyo SOS and Godzilla: Final Wars.

Tokyo SOS has a far more balanced narrative structure, with a clear chain of events and more relatable human characters. The action was awesome, giving Godzilla, Mothra, and Kiryu all a good amount of screen time, with great effects and choreography. I even liked the themes presented in the story; basically about letting the dead rest rather than forcing them to fight. I've heard Godzilla against Mechagodzilla, the film this is a sequel to, is better over all, but I haven't seen it yet. I still enjoyed this one a lot.

Final Wars is a flat-out action movie from beginning to end. The characters are all-around much more extravagant than Tokyo SOS, with humans and mutants and aliens fighting each other with Matrix-style martial arts in elaborate costumes (one character is literally an American muscle-man who likes to carry around a katana and barely even use it,) though there are a few "straight man" characters to even it out a bit. One thing that was disappointing was, due to having so many monsters in a single film, most of the actual monster fights are too brief, giving little time to appreciate the effects and choreography, which are admittedly great. The finale makes up for it, but the constant cutting back to the human conflict can be jarring. I think a longer run time would have helped the film balance out more, but that would be at the cost of making the film 3 hours long....all in all, a fun Royal Rumble that you should absolutely not take seriously.

watched spider man 2 and 1 recently
they are really starting to show their age
which i guess makes sense considering they're a decade and older now. which is so strange to me

op pop figures, specifically luffy, have been moved very close to the top of the list of things i want but cant afford
that scene where luffy came out of megalo.. so awesome.

I might have reached a point where I should see a doctor about my back pain. I've had back pain before but it always seems to come back in the same spot. And I'm kind of concerned that it might develop into something serious. Until I get the opportunity, I have my heating pads.

There's plenty of summer help at work. So I could likely take off when needed.

The only age showing to me is the early 2000's CGI, some of the props in the first movie, and a few Evil Dead-esque shots that feel hella out of place. Otherwise, my favorite films showcasing Spider-Man.

I don't know, man. Coming from ASM2, these look like they were from the early 2000's to me, which before seeing the new one I wouldn't have said.
There are a lot of scenes in 1 that have a distinct early 2000's look in the camera angles and stuff. Like when you see something from the 90s and go "that's so 90's." I'm not saying that they look bad or that they don't hold up, it's just apparent that they're "older" movies now. And Batman Begins which came out a year after 2 doesn't look nearly as old as 2 does now.

However I think the age adds a bit of charm to the movies, given that they're adapting early Spider-Man (ignoring 3, of course. always.) it seems somewhat appropriate to have them look a bit older.

excuse me while i gush about fishman island arc for a minute because if i don't say this i'll forget, and i want to remember for the mega op thread.

    no spoilers

I freaking love this arc. It's perfect for being the "return" arc, and even more perfect reading while in the mindset of having been away from this world for a while. After I finished part 1 I went out of town for a couple days and couldn't read, so when I came back it felt like I had been away for a while (while this was cool it kinda ****ed me over on finishing by 6/5). This arc is paced wonderfully. It never feels like it's dragging and I'm always wanting more. It's consistent. What it does even better is showcasing how the crew has gotten stronger over the past few years, while still maintaining a sense of urgency and giving them the seemingly impossible-to-overcome threats that OP always does. You don't want to come back and have the crew getting smacked around, but you also don't want them to not have a challenge, and this arc manages this flawlessly. It also brings back a MUCH-NEEDED and much-missed sense of adventure that OP has been lacking for over 100 chapters. Not to say that those chapters were bad, they certainly weren't, but OP is an adventure series and not sense Skypiea has there been an arc that's just the Strawhats willingly traveling to an island and getting sucked into an adventure that is not detrimental to the crew in some way. It brings a refreshing sense of levity (which was really needed after the heavy stuff of post-war) without feeling inconsequential. It's everything that OP is at it's core, and wonderful for it. Not to mention how world-building it is, as well as answering some questions I've had for a long time (like Arlong Park long).
One of the biggest criticism of OP is that Skypiea is pointless, and I have gone out of my way to defend the arc from this criticism, and will likely do the same with this. This arc is the same in Skypiea in that it's simply the Strawhats traveling to an island for the sake of adventure and getting more than they bargained for. It's not the heavy stuff of Water 7 or Marineford, and while these types of arcs are great and make up the bulk of good OP, arcs like Skypiea and Fishman Island define what this series is and demonstrate how much charm it has.
I've heard that this arc is not well-liked for being too long, but this is not a problem at all in the manga. The anime has the same number of episodes as the manga does chapters, so obviously it was padded out to absurdity. If anyone is watching OP, I would recommend reading this arc instead. This is a good arc and one worth experiencing in the best way possible.

Retail will do that to a back... Mine hurts quite a bit from the days of retail. I ended up getting a very deep massage and felt like a new man.

Also, retail will make you want wrongfully punch people. Don't give into that.[DOUBLEPOST=1401667062][/DOUBLEPOST]
I haven't actually seen Final Wars yet... Isn't it like some super villain with a monster spawner tried invading Tokyo while Godzilla is already invading Tokyo?

That actually sounds kinda fun. I may try that in the future.
Sometimes I want to play through a KH but don't want to do all of the side stuff but always feel like starting a new file means that's required, so I may try this.

about to start Film Z. please don't let me down like nearly every other one has.

The writing is....weak. Explaining it made me realize how much so.

    To synopsize:
    • Beginning of film, Captain Gordon and his crew on the Gotengo manage to imprison Godzilla by freezing him in the South Pole.
    • Some 40(?) years later, the Earth Defense Force are fighting monsters with the aid of mutants (basically superhumans in this film.) Ozaki, a mutant, is the main character.
    • The EDF have found the mummified remains of Gigan, who apparently is related to the mutants through M-Base in their DNA.
    • Fairies show up, say Gigan is evil and that Mothra will help save the Earth if monsters show up.
    • Monsters show up around the world: Zilla in Australia, Rodan in the U.S., Anguirus in China, Ebirah in Japan, etc.
    • Xilliens capture the monsters, saying that they want peace and wish to save Earth from a collision with an incoming planet.
    • Surprise, human protagonists discover the Xillians are lying about the planet-collision thing and want to imprison the human race for food.
    • Xilliens just switch to attacking the Earth with the same monsters that were doing that in the first place.
    • Gordon, Ozaki, and whatever the other people's names are, get on the Gotengo to release Godzilla, who's frozen in the South Pole.
    • That happens, and then GODZILLA TOURS THE WORLD WHILE KICKING MONSTER ASS
I won't give away the finale (it's pretty predicable anyway,) but that's about the gist of the film. It's got some really cool fights, but the human/Kaiju balance is way out-of-wack for me. I mean, at least the humans have cool fight scenes for once, but they're too long and take up too much focus, leaving the Kaiju battles to feel way too short.
