Has anyone had a problem where, no matter how hard they try, they WANT to care about someone, but they just have difficulty caring for....well, anybody aside from themself?

Not particularly. In terms of generalised care; I have that to a certain extent too.
Essentially; it's just a normal thing. You get over it eventually, it doesn't take that long to do so either.
In terms of romance; you can't force yourself to care like that. Nobody can choose who they love.
