How could you possibly cook up such a childish defense and expect to get away with it ?

Did I say blacks weren't committing crimes? No. I simply said that because there are more blacks than whites, it makes sense that more blacks are arrested or whatever. Not out of racism, but just simply because there are more of them. Now, can racism be involved when police arrest black people? Absolutely! However, that doesn't mean that all black people they arrest is out of racism.

It could just be a statistical glitch, sure, but when you look at the nation-wide statistics a pattern quickly emerges. For instance white people are more likely to be drug users, but black people are (three times if memory serves) more likely to get arrested for it. By all means don' t take it on my word, check it out for yourself.

I suppose most black people know from experience that they' re more likely to be suspected in the US, just like I know from personal experience that my whitey-whitey, glass-wearing, slickly clothed, pedantic-mouthed face gets away with a lot of ****. I don' t fear walking around with hemp in my pocket because the probability of a cop stop and frisking me for an ID, let alone asking to check my pockets, is extremely unlikely. It only happens when I' m driving and they can' t see my face. The last time it happened the cop wanted to check my alcohol levels at first, but he quickly took it on my word that I didn' t drink more than is legally allowed and dropped it. I kid you not. And that' s just one anecdote in a sea of anecdotes. Gee, I wonder why white people are more likely to be drug users. The double standard is blatant in my country, I assume it' s just as blatant in yours. I know equality is an utopia, an ideal we should strive for but will never actually achieve, but in both our countries the police system clearly isn' t striving as much as it could.

US Police Come Under Gunfire, Arrest 31 in Missouri Racial Unrest

(Reuters) - U.S. police said early on Tuesday they came under heavy gunfire and arrested 31 people during another night of racially charged protests in Ferguson, Missouri, sparked by the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white policeman 10 days ago.

Demonstrations, mostly peaceful but with spasms of violence by smaller groups, have flared since Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead while walking down a residential street on August 9.

State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, briefing reporters on Monday's night's violence, said "our officers came under heavy gunfire" in one area.

"Not a single bullet was fired by officers despite coming under heavy attack," he told a news conference. Riot police had confiscated two guns from protesters and what looked like a petrol bomb. Four officers had been injured.

Johnson separately told CNN that two people were shot within the crowd, but not by police, and were taken to hospital. There was no immediate word on their condition.

The violence has captured headlines around the world, raising questions about the state of U.S. race relations nearly six years after Americans elected their first black president.

"This has to stop. I don't want anybody to get hurt. We have to find a way to stop this," said Johnson, an African-American who grew up in the area and who took over security efforts after the mostly white local force was accused of using excessive force against blacks.

An overnight curfew has been imposed and the National Guard, the U.S. state militia, has been deployed in the St. Louis suburb of 21,000 people to stop looting and burning that have punctuated the protests.

President Barack Obama and civil rights leaders have appealed for calm while a federal investigation into the shooting proceeds.

"While I understand the passions and the anger that arise over the death of Michael Brown, giving in to that anger by looting or carrying guns, and even attacking the police, only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos," Obama told a news conference on Monday.

"It undermines, rather than advancing, justice."

BOTTLES HURLED

Monday night's clashes between riot police and protesters followed hours of mostly peaceful demonstrations, Reuters witnesses said.

Police had closed a roadway to traffic to provide a path for marches but said a smaller group within the larger crowd hurled bottles, rocks and petrol bombs at officers standing near armored vehicles. Police responded by firing gas-filled canisters and a noise cannon to try to disperse the throng.

Some demonstrators, including a church minister using a blow horn, urged crowds to calm down.

There have been largely peaceful protests over Brown's killing elsewhere in the United States including in St. Louis, New York, Seattle and Oakland. Police commander Johnson said some of those arrested had come from California and New York.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Ferguson on Saturday and a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. He also mobilized the National Guard to back up state police.

Obama said he told the governor the use of the National Guard should be limited and called for conciliation in communities hit by the unrest. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will visit Ferguson on Wednesday, Obama said.

Holder said over 40 FBI agents were canvassing Ferguson neighborhoods in their investigation and an additional medical examination was being performed on Brown. Results of autopsies done by federal and St. Louis County authorities were pending.

MULTIPLE SHOTS

Brown was shot by white policeman Darren Wilson, 28, who is now on paid leave, in hiding and under criminal investigation.

Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head, and may have been lowering his head in surrender when the fatal shot struck, according to Brown family attorney Daryl Parks. There were no signs of struggle with the officer and no gunshot residue on the body.

Ferguson police quoted Wilson as saying he had asked Brown and a friend to move off the street where they were walking, and onto the sidewalk. Wilson reported that Brown reached into his patrol car and struggled for his gun.

St. Louis County prosecutors' spokesman Edward Magee said the case could be presented this week to an investigating grand jury which would decide whether Wilson will be indicted.

Ferguson has seen a stark demographic shift in recent decades, going from all white to mostly black. Out of a police force of 53, three officers are black.

Many Ferguson residents say Brown's killing was emblematic of police excesses against blacks, a charge authorities deny.

Brown's friend Dorian Johnson, 22, said Wilson had reached out of his car window to grab Brown and the teenager tried to get away. Johnson said Brown held up his hands to surrender but Wilson got out of his car and shot him several times.

The National Bar Association, containing the largest network of black attorneys and judges, filed a lawsuit on Monday against Ferguson and its police department, demanding it protect evidence of the shooting and arrests made during protests.

Looting has left a number of Ferguson stores in shambles. Two fires were set on Monday evening, one at a business and one at an unoccupied home, Johnson said.

The disturbances are the worst of their kind for more than a year. In July 2013, there were angry, albeit peaceful, protests in cities across the United States over the acquittal in a Florida second-degree murder and manslaughter trial of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic, who shot dead an unarmed black teenager, Trayvon Martin, in the street during a scuffle in February 2012.

Calm Restored in Ferguson, Support for Officer Builds

FERGUSON -- As calm remained early Friday morning on the streets where Michael Brown's death brought angry protests, support for the officer who killed the teen remained strong.

A page created to raise donations for Darren Wilson raised $218,000 from 5,400 people in the last four days.

The page on the gofundme site says, "We stand behind Officer Darren Wilson and his family during this trying time in their lives. All proceeds will be sent directly to Darren Wilson and his family for any financial needs they may have including legal fees."

On the streets of Ferguson, a collective anger that exploded into almost two weeks of protests and riots gave way to a more tranquil environment. On Friday morning, the town of 21,000 seemed to have some of its bustle back.

Traffic moved briskly along West Florissant Avenue, site of the protests that have unfolded here. Businesses opened and people patronized them. The police remained, but mostly keeping a low profile, sitting in patrol cars off the street.

City buses rolled along the busy corridor and commuters carrying shopping bags waited for them.

Early Friday and late Thursday night, the atmosphere was more reflective of a street fair.

"It was another good night,'' Missouri State Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said at a 1 a.m. briefing. "We're heading toward a sense of peace for our community. Through 12:30 a.m., there were just seven arrests, including five for failing to disperse.

Thursday night, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill strolled among the relatively sparse crowds while vendors hawked T-shirts. The Missouri Democrat expressed confidence that the violent protests that gripped this community of 21,000 for much of the past 11 days are over. "I think it's time for a lot of the (media) to leave here, she said.

After a night of relative calm Wednesday and into early Thursday morning Gov. Jay Nixon ordered National Guard troops to begin withdrawing from Ferguson. Johnson said he expected troops would begin leaving later Friday.

Earlier Thursday, along West Florissant Avenue, the scene of nightly demonstrations, there was a sense of normalcy. People strolled to stores and city buses were back on schedule.

The spot where Brown, 18, was killed by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Aug. 9 was quiet, save for a few onlookers and reporters who took photos of the flowers, candles and stuffed animals left in memoriam. A preliminary autopsy found Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head.

Nixon sent troops into Ferguson Monday to protect state troopers and police trying to cope with increasingly violent streets demonstrations after the death of the unarmed teen.

The soldiers set up checkpoints in and out of the police command center, which is located in a shopping center about a quarter mile away from the site of most of the protests.

"I greatly appreciate the men and women of the Missouri National Guard for successfully carrying out the specific, limited mission of protecting the Unified Command Center so that law enforcement officers could focus on the important work of increasing communication within the community, restoring trust, and protecting the people and property of Ferguson," Nixon said in a statement.

Attorney General Eric Holder, in Ferguson Wednesday, said Thursday in Washington that he found a "real fracture" among the people of Ferguson during his brief visit but also "a desire to be seen as equals, a real desire to have healing."

"Out of this tragedy comes a great opportunity to reforming that community," Holder told reporters.

Holder also said the Justice Department was "keeping all options open" in its review of the Ferguson shooting, including a possible examination of whether the local police department engaged in a pattern of excessive conduct.

McCaskill told the Associated Press that all of the physical evidence from the case was being flown Thursday from St. Louis to the FBI forensics lab in Quantico, VA. The evidence includes shell casings and trajectories, blood patterns and clothing, she said.

"The only thing you have to test the credibility of eyewitnesses to a shooting like this is in fact the physical evidence," McCaskill said. "I'm hopeful the forensic evidence will be clear and will shed a lot more light on what the facts were."

Earlier Thursday, about 150 protesters rallied outside the Buzz Westfall Justice Center in Clayton, demanding that St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch, who is presenting the Brown shooting to a grand jury, be removed from the case.

The panel is investigating whether Wilson should be criminally charged in the case. The group planned to deliver 70,000 signatures from people around the USA calling for McCulloch's removal. Some fear McCulloch's close ties to police — his father was killed on duty and other family members have worked for the police department — would prevent him from being fair and impartial.

McCulloch said in a statement that he has "no intention of walking away from the responsibilities and duties entrusted to me by the people of this community."

Nixon said Tuesday that he is not asking McCulloch to recuse himself. "There is a well-established process by which a prosecutor can recuse themselves from a pending investigation, and a special prosecutor be appointed,'' Nixon said. "Departing from this established process could unnecessarily inject legal uncertainty into this matter and potentially jeopardize the prosecution."

In a Thursday interview with TV station KSDK, Nixon reiterated that he would not remove McCulloch.

"You have to trust those democratically elected processes in place," Nixon said. "So no, I won't be making that move. I think its best, you know, you've got dual investigations and prosecutions going on at the same time, federal and state. There's a great deal of attention on all this sort of stuff, I think each of us that have significant and separate responsibilities, and should continue to get to the task of accomplishing those as efficiently, effectively, fairly as possible, that will lead to justice."

Meanwhile, a new national Pew Research Center poll finds that black and white Americans are sharply divided over the broader racial implications of the Brown shooting and its aftermath. Among blacks, 80% say the shooting "raises important issues about race," and 18% say "race is getting more attention than it deserves."

Just 37% of whites polled say the case raises important racial issues,and 47% say race is getting more attention than it deserves. The poll of 1,000 adults was conducted Aug. 14-17 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points.

New Audio Reveals Pause in Gunfire When Michael Brown Was Shot

(CNN) -- Could a newly released audio provide more clues on what led up to Michael Brown's shooting death?

The FBI has questioned a man who says he recorded audio of gunfire at the time Brown was shot by Ferguson police on August 9, the man's attorney told CNN.

In the recording, a quick series of shots can be heard, followed by a pause and then another quick succession of shots.

Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg analyzed the recording and said he detected at least 10 gunshots -- a cluster of six, followed by four.

"I was very concerned about that pause ... because it's not just the number of gunshots, it's how they're fired," the man's attorney, Lopa Blumenthal, told CNN's Don Lemon. "And that has a huge relevance on how this case might finally end up."

The man, who asked that his identity not be revealed, lives near the site of the shooting and was close enough to have heard the gunshots, his attorney said.

He was speaking to a friend on a video chat service and happened to be recording the conversation at the same time Brown was shot, Blumenthal said.

The attorney said she learned of the man's recording late last week from a mutual friend.

"I had to get his consent before I could reach out to the FBI," Blumenthal said.

CNN cannot independently verify the authenticity of the tape and has asked the FBI for confirmation of their interview with the man who made the recording.

The meaning of the pause

It's difficult to prove from the audio why the pause took place or whose narrative it supports.

Attorney Chris Chestnut said he was surprised by the gap in shots.

"It's the pause that gives most concern in a police shooting, especially with an unarmed victim, because at this point Mr. Brown is defenseless -- he has no weapon," said Chestnut, who represented the family of Jonathan Ferrell.

Like Brown, Ferrell was an unarmed African-American man who was shot and killed by a white police officer.

But if the gunfire heard on the audio is indeed from the Brown incident, the pause doesn't automatically suggest wrongful intent by the officer.

"To be fair, there could be other explanations for that pause," said attorney Van Jones, co-host of CNN's Crossfire. "Maybe the officer will say, 'Well I fired, and he kept advancing, so I fired again.'"

Witnesses and a friend of Officer Darren Wilson have given conflicting accounts of what led up to Brown's death.

Dueling narratives in Michael Brown shooting

Dorian Johnson, a friend of Brown's who was walking with him at the time of the shooting, said the officer shot Brown once by the police car and again as he ran away.

According to Johnson, Brown was struck in the back and then turned around and put his arms up as the officer kept shooting.

But a friend of Wilson said Brown mocked the officer and charged at him before the shooting began.

An autopsy showed that all the entry wounds were in the front of Brown's body.

Key witness speaks out

Ferguson police said Brown allegedly robbed a convenience store shortly before the shooting.

And reports that his friend Johnson had a criminal record that including lying to police has put Johnson's credibility in question.

In 2011, Johnson was arrested and accused of theft and lying to police about his first name, age and address.

Johnson said Monday night he doesn't understand why some are questioning his credibility.

"I see they bring up my past, my history, but it's not like it's a long rap sheet," Johnson told Lemon. "This one incident shouldn't make me a bad person."

I'm not sure whether this many bullets are reflected in the autopsy but I have no idea what sort of relevance this might have since it doesn't change what happened. At any rate, the autopsy shows Brown was shot six times. To correct a previous statement of yours, though, things are NOT calming down. The media would like you to believe so because then people will forget about Ferguson and the movement will lose any awareness and traction it may have gained.

With Ferguson (and really anything) it's best to turn to independent news sources for the REAL news (stay away from CNN, nbc, fox news, etc.). If anyone would like to keep up

While I understand, do know, and agree with you that the media does things like this, whether it's over-exaggeration or whatever, people seemed pretty calm in that video, so things must be calming down, no? Maybe not everywhere, but perhaps it's getting there.

I think it's less important to know how many shots were fired (after all, it is logical to assume that at least a few shots missed) and more important to note the pause in the shooting. Why did Wilson fire, stop, then resume firing? At the very least, the recording is consistent with eyewitness accounts saying that he fired, stopped, then continued to fire.

(CNN) -- Ferguson, Missouri, Police Chief Thomas Jackson apologized Thursday to the parents of Michael Brown, as well as to any peaceful protesters who feel he didn't do "enough to protect their constitutional right to protest."

Specifically, he apologized that it took investigating officers four hours to remove Brown's body from the street after Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot him last month.

"I'm truly sorry for the loss of your son. I'm also sorry that it took so long to remove Michael from the street," he said during his video statement.

Investigators were doing "important work" trying to uncover the truth and collect evidence during those four hours, Jackson said, but "it was just too long, and I'm truly sorry for that."

"Please know that the investigating officers meant no disrespect to the Brown family, to the African-American community or the people (in the neighborhood where Brown was shot). They were simply trying to do their jobs," Jackson said.

Dressed casually in a red polo shirt, Jackson acknowledged that most of the protesters who took to the streets of Ferguson following the shooting did so peacefully, but there were others among them "who had a different agenda."

Jackson singled out the peaceful protesters in his apology.

"The right of the people to peacefully assemble is what the police are here to protect. If anyone who was peacefully exercising that right is upset and angry, I feel responsible and I'm sorry," he said.

He also acknowledged that the incident has sparked a larger conversation about societal issues, and he expressed interest in being part of the discussion.

"Overnight I went from being a small-town police chief to being part of a conversation about racism, equality and the role of policing in that conversation. As chief of police, I want to be part of that conversation. I also want to be part of the solution," he said.

He emphasized that "the city belongs to all of us" and conceded that Ferguson and the surrounding areas have "much work to do."

"For any mistakes I've made, I take full responsibility. It's an honor to serve the city of Ferguson and the people who live there. I look forward to working with you in the future to solve our problems, and once again, I deeply apologize to the Brown family," he said.

The town was cast into the national spotlight when protests erupted following Wilson's shooting of the 18-year-old Brown.

The demonstrations quickly devolved into looting, vandalism and violence but eventually calmed. The St. Louis suburb of 21,000 erupted again this week after one of three Brown memorials at the site of the shooting burned.

While many peaceful protesters took to the street Tuesday night, violent elements within the demonstration stoked chaos, attacking police with guns, rocks and bottles and vandalizing and looting businesses, Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson said. One person threw a Molotov cocktail at a parking structure, and there was an attempt to set a gasoline fire at a custard shop, he said.

Two officers were injured, one of whom was struck by a rock below the eye, Johnson said.

While Johnson promised police would protect public safety as well as the freedoms of speech and expression, he warned that police would have no choice but to respond to any violent actions.

"If that means officers will respond in riot gear, they will," he said Wednesday. "We cannot have nights like last night. We can't have actions like last night that can result in injury or death. Those will not be tolerated."

In recent days, the City Council has taken up measures to reform court procedures and the way the city handles certain fines.

The City Council is also presently considering a citizen review board that would work with the police department.

Regardless of the outcome of the announcement, Brown's parents are calling for a four and a half minute silence after the announcement is made, in memory of Michael's body being left in the street for four and a half hours.

All it takes is to read the disgusting racism on ANY article about this. There's your explanation. There's the reason why people are angry. And there's the reason why they've taken to violence."

That's what I had to say about this turn of events. I wish I could say I was surprised at the decision. It's absolutely disgusting that a man walks away from killing an unarmed 18 year old without even going to trial. He should have been tried even if there was ONE member of the jury that had doubts about him being justified, whether or not he IS actually justified. However, dwelling on what happened isn't going to do ****.

What needs to happen now is people need to get involved and change the system, both from within and without. I have no idea how to get this done, but it needs to be done. Remember, the Republicans were scared shitless when Ferguson residents were registering to vote. That says something.
