Sweet Poison

"There is a creek nearby and the ocean that way," Nox pointed east. He walked into the house. A latern in the house turned in all by itself.

 

Daine nodded. "I'll be right back." She headed toward the sound of running water, her arm throbbing painfully. Finding the creek, she kneeled down, then slid her arm into it, closing her eyes and whispering a few words. A soft blue light surrounded her arm, making the pain go away. She smiled, the light turning her eyes a bright teal.

 

Nox headed inside. Everything was as he left it. He looked at some of his plants. He had hung some up to dry out so they would last longer.

 

She shook her arm out, flexing the hand and fingers, then smiled. Good as new. Turning to the house, she cautiously stepped inside, her eyes curious. "So this is what the house of a witch looks like." she murmured, tying her hair back.

 

There was a water basin that had a few pots around it. Some could be used for magic others for cooking. There was a cabinet that was open that was filled with carved pieces of wood that would be used for charms. There were lots of bottles filled with liquids and small plants. As well as many empty ones. In the corner of the shack had a large sack of slat. Nox was taking out empty potion bottles and putting them in small cases.

 

She watched him, smiling a little. "Fun work?" she asked, tilting her head as she watched him. It was interesting..he must have categorized it all in his head. She didn't understand how something like that could work, let alone be done.

 

"No just the regular chores," Nox said, "do me a favor start a fire on the pit for please."
In the center was a fire pit that had a small pile of ashes.

 

Daine nodded, then moved quietly over to the fire place. She feared fire, as did most of her kind, but they had accepted it. Taking a breath, she pulled a box of matches off the counter next to it, and struck a few, getting a tiny blaze going.

 

Nox went through a few of his cabnets. He searched for some thing to cook.

 

Daine sat back, thinking. "You live here alone? Have you ever had any family?" she asked, her eyes thoughtfully staring into the flames. There was so much they didnt' know about each other, and yet, he had rescued her. The wolves would inevitabley follow them, once they found the strength, so why would he risk all this?

 

"Yeah my father but we aren't exactly on speaking terms," Nox said. He grabed soom noodles and a copper pot, "think you cn fill this with water?"

 

She smiled lopsidedly. "I can cook, you know." Taking the pot, she went back to the small creek, humming to herself. So he had a father....no mention of a mother, then. She was curious about this one. He was slightly different.

 

Nox chopped up a few of his plants and mixed them together. He grabed a jar of thick red liquid and opened it.

 

Pot filled, Daine walked back to the house, quieting herself down as she entered. "So....you never had a family?" she asked, setting the pot in front of him and leaning against the table gently, her hands pressed against the countertop as she watched him work..

 

"I did but me and my dad never got along. I loved my mom. Till she passed away," Nox said. He put the pot on top of the embers of the fire.

 

"I'm sorry." Daine murmured, her eyes watching the blaze thoughtfully. "I never knew who my Da was. My mother never told me. It's the custom...since the males were usually the ones hunted for sport." She realized she still felt bitter, since her tone turned to cyniscym.

 

ravenously, Saro shreded the rabbit's remains and swallowed everything that wasn't bone. After having his fill, Saro looked down at the soaked grass, hanging his head in shame. He shouldn't have done what he did, he had caught a few fish, just to he didn't have to steal from his Beta.

 

Aly sat up, shifting back to wolf and stratching behind her ear. "You're fine." she said, guessing at his thoughts. "We work as a time, which means you have to accept things from me, and I from you." She licked his cheek gently, giving him a wolfy grin. "Shall we go terroize someone?"

 

Saro crawled on all fours and layed his head on Aly's lap, shaking his head.

"Not now Beta, We should rest for now. The sun is almost down."

With a yawn, he curled into a ball and closed his yellow eyes and rested in the safest place he knew, her.

 

Aly nodded, curling up around him, but keeping her yellow eyes open. Someone had to guard after all. That mage might come back and decide that he should destroy them both, or experiment on them. She shuddered. She would die if that happened, any of them would.
