    It wasn't canon. It didn't really happen in the normal story line. Like the fight againist "Terra" in KH2.

    Sephiroth was not an essential character to the story. You didn't even need to beat him since he was optional. I think Square-Enix just put him in there because he is so iconic to the franchise and he would get a lot of facial recognition from fans.

    I think it is because Sephiroth isn't related to the story. The Xemnas battle is.

    He couldn't have forgotten Sephiroth due to Castle Oblivion because all of his memories were set back exactly the way they were...
