Alright, I've finally started playing FFX and I have to say that in context this scene is not bad. The scene wouldn't make sense if they weren't laughing awkwardly like that. It was the whole point. In the clip of the opening post it was at 0:55 that they started actually laughing.

Don't get me wrong the voice acting isn't great, but this scene gets a lot of ridicule it doesn't deserve.

But let me explain the joke

It's not a matter of WHAT the context of the scene was, what matters is that if someone were to watch that scene with no clue of anything prior to that, then they would be utterly confused as to what the **** is going on.

When this game came out, I still lived with my family as did/do most people on this forum
So YOU may have known the context of the scene, but the people around you did not, thus it was especially embarrassing when the only scene of a game that you genuinely love that someone else witnesses is THIS scene.

Hence the reason why you turn down the volume.
The ridicule does not come from the fact that the scene is good or bad but rather from the situation most players were in DURING this scene (ie a sibling/friend/parent in the room)

 

I've just now finally gotten a chance to play the game and after playing this scene I wanted to defend it (not from you, but others referece this scene as an example of bad voice acting and such) I didn't think it merited a new thread unless I couldn't find one new enough. This thread isn't that old so I bumped it.
