    Yes. Suicide is defined as "the act of a human being intentionally causing his or her own death". So unintentional suicide would be a contradiction.

    My opinion on the subject is basically the same as P's. Because while smoking does shorten your life slowly, unlike suicide, the exchanging of quantity of life for quality isn't permanent. One can quit smoking and improve both the quality and quantity of life from there. While their lives may never be the same as the days before they started smoking that doesn't mean that they can't improve. He/she still has the ability to choose better options for his/her self. Suicide, on the other hand, is a more drastic transaction that most of the time isn't irresversible. So while this person that you know might be a bit of a dick, I don't really think that he's being hypocritical.

    Yet, as I noted above, it is rarely based around the notion of "If I survive, my life will get better." Therefore, suicide and attempted suicide may or may not always have the goal of death.
