Ok, so I was just restarting KHII today, and while I was playing, I noticed that in the memories of Sora, behind Castle Oblivion, there's that little thing that swirls. Looking at it a little closer, it almost looks like it's the Land of Departure. Like, you can sorta make out hills, sunlight, and everything. So is that really the rest of Land of Departure behind Castle Oblivion? Or am I just imagining things?

It's something else. Probably a locked world. Are you at the end of the game? I think some worlds get locked and have that kind of effect on them...or you haven't visited it yet. In either case, Nomura hadn't even designed the faces of Terra, Aqua, and Ven at that time. There's no way The Land of Departure could be in KHII. Maybe you're even seeing things. Could you get a screen of it?

Yeah, I'd like to get a shot of it too, if you don't mind.

If it really was the Land of Departure, it makes sense because
Castle Oblivion is what the Land of Departure used to be, they're in the same location, and after Master Xehanort defeated Eraqus by Terra's hand, he brought darkness to destroy the world. This is where Aqua later brings Ven when he's in a coma to keep him safe.

let me try and see if I can get one
Edit: Here's a picture. Not the clearest, but it's what I got

You can sorta make it out behind the castle.

I can kinda see a bit of it but the picture makes it hard to tell. It looks like there might be mountain next to the cloud on the right but that might just be another cloud.

sorry, it was the clearest spot to get a picture.
But I think it's a mountain on the right, because it just has that sort of shape.

Hmm to be honest, i don't have the faintest idea as to what that is besides the obvious feature of some snowcapped mountain and a ray of light...

I could get all philosophical and state that it is the foreshadow of the "Kingdom Hearts Armageddon," the last stand of Master Xehanort. It would be the true meaning behind the name, Land of Departure, as it is the departure of evil. But like I said, just speculations that might not even occur. However they may, as Nomura tends to lean on such hypotheses in order to build depth in his story.

That's interesting, I never spotted those before. However, when CO was designed then I don't think they even thought about the Land of Departure as I think that was a late addition in the designing of BBS (I think though). The Land of departure could have come out of them putting the hills in randomly. I do think it's possible that they just decided they would have a backstory behind the creation of CO before they even thought about BBS but I don't know, it's more likely just a background.

That could indeed be true, or we could be thinking too hard for a reasonable explanation...

In BBS, when Aqua "seals" the LoD, it changed physically, the castle and the rest of the world. My true guess is: It is merely the background of the LoD that has been changed with the rest of the world.

    I agree with this.
When Aqua unlocked Castle Oblivion, it changed so much, it was incapable to tell it was the same place, had we not seen Aqua do this.
It's probably just random mountains and light that were in the world of Castle Oblivion at the time, because, I don't believe anything of "Land of Departure" was left.
