"Don't say that," Sora pleaded, speaking right after Kairi said those simple words. Even though in this situation, Sora was more of the victum, he considered himself the lucky one. He had the priviledge of having Kairi in his life, as his girlfriend. That was something he could only dream of a year ago.

 

Kairi lowered her eyes from Sora's, looking down at her lap. "I lied to you...tricked you into believing that I was going to stay here. And then I just left." The girl's voice was slightly shaky as she spoke, and she sniffled. "Now that I think about it...it was like I was throwing it all away, because of that chance that something really could have happened to me," she explained softly. "And yet...you're right here, pouring your heart out to me." Kairi pressed her lips together for a moment, stopping there.

 

Sora looked up at Kairi, his eyes softening with her confession. "I know what you did, Kairi," Sora stated softly. "But I chose to love you anyway." What they had was too valuable to just let go. And he wasn't going to lose what was most important to him.

Kairi closed her eyes at Sora's words, tears falling again and trickling down her cheeks. "I know..." she said quietly. "But after hearing everything you just said," she started slowly, her voice shaky. "I feel so terrible..." She lifted her gaze to him, her watery indigo eyes meeting his teary ocean-blue. "You're so sweet, Sora...so loving and caring... And when I left, it was like I was just throwing every ounce of it away."

Sora wanted to protest; to say that she was wrong. But really, that was how things were. He wasn't going to lie to her about this, so he decided to stay silent instead, in case she wanted to say any more. If not, then he would have to come up with something.

 

Kairi felt the tears trickle down her cheeks and she brought up her free hand to wipe them away. She sniffled once, keeping her eyes down. "I can't believe I did that...I never thought that I would," she continued softly. "But...but I had to help Namine." She bit her lip, looking down at her hand that was resting in her lap and was not occupied by Sora's.

 

Sora did understand that part, and he wanted Kairi to know that. But he didn't really have anything important or meaninful to add, so instead he just murmered a "mmhmm," to let her know that he was listening.

 

"But when I did," Kairi started, looking up at Sora again, "I was leaving you behind. And that wasn't right...or fair." The girl felt herself tighten her hold slightly on Sora's hand without thought. She let her indigo eyes look into the ocean-blue in front of her, and she felt her heart give out a pang of sorrow and hurt. "And I apologize with all my heart for that," Kairi added quietly, looking into Sora's eyes for a second longer before flitting her eyes to their hands.

 

Sora saw Kairi avoiding his gaze, and his eyes softened. He squeezed her hand without thought, his eyes staying on her face. "I know you're sorry," he said quietly, his eyes flickering down to their hands before going back up to her face.

 

Kairi nodded slightly, closing her eyes for a moment as she tried to calm her emotions. Her wet eyelashes tickled her skin when her eyes were shut, and she hoped her tears were done. But she had a feeling they weren't, despite what she hoped for.

 

"Kairi..." Sora murmered her name quietly, his eyes moving down to Kairi's hands before going back up. He could sense the sorrow in her heart, and that emotion was something he wouldn't wish on anyone, especially not Kairi. No matter what the circumstances were, he would never wish anything bad to happy to her. She was too precious for him.

 

"I'm sorry..." Kairi said again, her eyes staying closed. Leaving Sora was her biggest regret, and she didn't know how many times she would have to apologize until it was okay...to Sora, and for how she felt about herself. Maybe it would never be alright, because Sora had just said that he would never leave her...and she had done it already.

 

"I know," Sora said quietly, the teen running his thumb over Kairi's smooth skin. Kairi's actions had caused him a lot of pain, and he couldn't deny that. But for her sake, he would let it go. Or at least, he would try to let it go. "You're forgiven," he whispered.

 

Kairi exhaled a breath softly at Sora's soft words, though they didn't really take away the guilt. She knew that she would feel ashamed of herself for a little while because of what she did, there was no way in denying that. The girl felt Sora's thumb run over her skin, the gentleness soothing in a way.

 

Sora looked down, his eyes resting on thier hands. He continued to gently stroke her hand, unable to think of anything to say. He really did hope that his gesture was comforting her; he didn't want her to be hurting in any way.

 

Kairi opened her eyes, looking at the boy in front of her. "Sora," she said softly. "I'll never do it again. I don't think either of us would be able to handle it..." She paused for a moment, her voice still a little shaky. Kairi sniffled once and then continued. "I love you...so much. I'll never leave you again, I promise."

 

Sora nodded faintly in agreement to the second statement. Kairi was right; he couldn't handle that, and neither could she. That statement reassured him that Kairi wasn't being selfish again, and he was grateful for that. The promise also meant a lot to him, and he couldn't find any words to responde. Instead of saying something elaborate and complex, he simply said "Alright."

 

Kairi looked at Sora for a minute in the silence that surrounded them after he spoke that one word, taking in his expression. She didn't really know what to make of it, not able to tell whether it was a good or bad expression. She took in a soft breath as she let her eyes fall on their hands again, not sure if she had anything more to say or not.

 

The air aroudn them still felt very heavy, and Sora wanted to lighten the mood in any way possible. "Besides," he continued. "I'm never letting you get away again." A weak smile appeared on his lips as he looked up, meeting Kairi's eyes.

 

Kairi met Sora's eyes, and she felt a faint smile form on her lips in response to both his words and his smile. She didn't mind his statement at all. She didn't have any problem with that.
