Sora saw Kairi look away, and he immediatly felt a wave of sadness wash over him. "What's wrong?" Sora asked without thought, immediatly wishing he could take back the question. There were a lot of things troubling both of them, of course. But what had caused Kairi to look away? That was what he really wanted to know at that moment.

 

"Nothing," Kairi answered, keeping her gaze down. Sora was already sick and drained from what happened earlier, and she didn't want him worrying about her when there was so much on his shoulders already. Besides, there were a ton of things wrong, some worse than others.

OOC: I gotta go take my friend. I'll be back soon.

 

Sora shook his head slightly, keeping his eyes on Kairi. "I know that's not true," he stated softly, looking at the girl despite the fact that she wasn't looking at him. After everything, he could see that Kairi was upset. He also knew she had to be upset, because he was too.

OOC: Okay, bye.

 

Kairi closed her eyes at Sora's words, knowing that she wasn't getting off that easy. She exhaled softly, opening her eyelids and letting her indigo orbs rest on her lap again. Kairi could feel Sora's gaze against her, and she felt the concern behind it...as well as the state of being upset.

 

Sora kept his soft blue eyes on Kairi, staying silent. This was a tough situation, and he didn't know how to start things out. Kairi was probably thinking the same thing...but...well, Sora really had no clue what to do here. So he would just have to wait a few extra moments to see if Kairi decided to speak up or not.

 

Kairi let her eyes lift to look at the nightstand by Sora's bed right next to her, biting her lip slightly. "It's just--" the girl started, but then stopped. She exhaled a breath, shaking her head slightly. "I don't know..." She didn't know how to express what she was feeling...everything she was feeling. Sora seemed to notice that something was bothering her once she turned away from him, so Kairi guessed that she could start there. But first she had to try and figure out the best words to describe this...guilt she was feeling.

 

Sora patiently kept his eyes on Kairi, waiting to see if she would say something. He could guess what she was feeling, but he didn't want to put words in her mouth or anything. So he decided that staying silent for a few more moments was a good idea.

 

Kairi started fiddling with her fingers again, staring at them in her lap as her words hung in the air. "...I guess that this whole thing...has me feeling like I'm...blameable ..." she confessed softly, trying to choose her words carefully. She kept her eyes on her hands for a moment, but then looked up at the wall, avoiding eye contact with Sora.

 

A look of curiosity crept into Sora's eyes, the brunette looking at Kairi despite the fact that she was avoiding his gaze. "What...do you mean?" Sora asked cautiously, his soft blue eyes staying locked on Kairi as he waited for a response.

 

Kairi pressed her lips together in hesitance, no longer messing with her hands. She blinked once, but kept her eyes away from Sora's. "I mean that I should be blamed for what happened earlier," she answered. "I was the root of the problem; Smith wanted me. And because of that, Namine..." Kairi lowered her head and closed her eyes, thinking about her best friend's condition. The girl knew that this was no time to be emotional, and so she tried to fight off the tears that were starting to appear behind her closed eyelids.

 

Sora's eyes softened slightly at the words, the teen noticing immediatly that Kairi seemed to be fighting off emotions. "I can see why you would see it that way," Sora started softly. "But you weren't the cause of any of this...it was Smith who did everything. You didn't ask for any of it."

 

Kairi nodded slightly in agreement. "You're right, I didn't," she said softly, raising her head. Finally, she let her eyes rest on Sora, still fighting back those tears. "I would never want any of this. But look at you, Sora. You're sick, you're hurt...and so are Roxas and Namine. And it's all because Smith wanted me...a princess." Kairi shook her head slightly, lowering her gaze.

 

Sora's gentle blue eyes stayed locked with Kairi, and before she had looked away, he noticed some tears starting to appear in the rims of her eyes. "We all were hurt with all this," Sora agreed quietly, lowering his gaze for a brief moment before looking back up. "But you can't hold yourself directly responsible. You didn't cause any of Namine's pain, or Roxas', or my sickness. That was all Smith." Sora stopped there, unable to think of anything else to say at that moment.

 

"Maybe..." Kairi said softly, keeping her eyes down. "But that doesn't mean that I think it's fair that I came out of there without an injury, and you guys came out with more than one." Kairi lifted her gaze to Sora again, her indigo eyes meeting his ocean-blue. For a second she forgot what she was going to say once she saw the look in his eyes, but after a brief moment she remembered. "Sora, do you honestly think any of this would've happened if I wasn't a Princess of Heart? If you think of it that way, you would understand why I can't help but blame myself."

 

"But you are a Princess, Kairi," Sora stated. "And an evil man wanted to take advantage of you for it. It's only natural that we would take extra good care of you and keep you safe." Of course, Sora had worked his hardest to protect all his friends, but he always found that he protected Kairi more because of his love for her. "Besides, you did come close to getting hurt a few times...and, even worse one other time." Sora was referring to when Smith was about to grab her. But thankfully, he had warned Kairi of the danger before it happened so she could get away. That moment had been pretty scary for him, and that only reminded him why he didn't want Kairi involved with Smith.

 

Kairi kept her eyes locked with Sora's for a minute, feeling tears reach the rims of her eyes and threaten to escape. She didn't want them to, though, not right now. She nodded slightly at Sora's words, understanding. Thinking back, she could only recall two times when she was in the line of fire. One of them where she literally was, with Smith shooting at her. And the other being right when she entered the warehouse, and somehow Sora had seen Smith approaching her from behind. He had kept her safe at that moment, like he just explained--taking good care of her and protecting her.

 

Sora gently brought up a hand, setting it on Kairi's cheek lightly as he held her gaze. "And that's not the only reason you get special treatment, of course," Sora continued quietly. "You're my girl; I'd never let anyone hurt you." If anything had happened to her at the warehouse, he would have blamed himself. He figured that if he hadn't been able to protect her, then he wasn't a very good protector. And of course, one of the things he wanted most was to be able to protect Kairi. Fortunatly for both of them, he had suceeded in doing that earlier.

 

Kairi felt her lips form a weak smile at Sora's words, the girl bringing up her hand and setting it lightly on Sora's forearm that he had outstretched to touch her cheek. She kept her eyes connected with his, her vision a little blurry. His words touched her heart, and Kairi knew that Sora meant what he said.

 

Sora returned Kairi's weak smile with one of his own, holding her gaze. He didn't care what had happened between them earlier; Kairi was his girl, and he would never let anyone hurt her. He was her protector...no matter what.

 

Kairi looked at Sora for one more moment, taking in his expression. Even in the worst of times Sora always had a way of making Kairi believe in the positive side of things, whether that was that she didn't cause her friends' pain or not. Even so, she felt as if it were his natural optimism affecting her. But she didn't mind; that was one of the reasons why she loved him. And now Kairi could see that maybe what she had done earlier--sneaking out--didn't have that much of an effect on how they felt for each other... Maybe...
