Sora turned his head slightly to look over at Kairi, hearing a sense of curiosity in her voice. Well, that was one thing that they needed to get out of the way, so Sora supposed it would be best just to say what he needed to right away. "At the warehouse, when I went to first rescue Namine," Sora started. "Smith tried to kill us both...using some kind of gas." The brunnette shook his head slightly, lowering his gaze to his lap for a moment. "I inhaled a lot of that, and I think it's affecting me now." Once he was done speaking, Sora looked up again, meeting Kairi's gentle blue eyes.

 

Kairi listened to Sora's words, trying to get them to sink in. And once she met his eyes again, they did. She pressed her lips together to keep them from separating in disbelief and shock, as well as sadness. "That's...horrible," she said softly, starting to feel even more concerned after taking in that information. That gas must have been so deadly, and she was both relieved and shocked that Sora was still here.

 

Sora saw the concern intensify in Kairi's eyes, and he silently wondered if he said too much. But then again...she had asked the question, and he had only given her an honest answer. At least he hadn't told her how sick he felt other than the fever alone...that would make things worse. Taking in her soft spoken answer, Sora only nodded softly, agreeing. Yes, it was horrible Smith tried to kill them using that gas. It was even more horrible that he almost suceeded.

 

Kairi kept her eyes on Sora's for a moment before she lowered her gaze to the bed, the silence hanging around them. Gosh, Sora and Namine had been in such a dangerous situation while she and Roxas just...stood at the corner of 6th Street and Washington, waiting for Smith to arrive when he wasn't even coming. Kairi felt horrible that things had taken that turn.

 

"I was expecting a trap," Sora started softly. "But I wasn't expecting something like that." He bit his lip lightly, lowering his gaze to the bed. Roxas had suggested the possibility, and Sora had agreed that it was a likely situation. But he was sure that Smith would at least meet Roxas and Kairi. He had been wrong about that...very wrong.

 

"Roxas and I both thought that he would actually show..." Kairi bit her lip once the soft-spoken words left her, blinking once. Her indigo eyes readjusted to Sora's bed sheets, the girl feeling her heart skip a beat as she thought of what could have happened to Sora.

 

Sora nodded faintly. "That's what I thought too," Sora said softly, his gaze staying down. Things would have worked out better in that way...sort of. Sora didn't know exactly what would have happened to his friends, but he knew that he and Namine wouldn't have been in that position if Smith really had gone to see Roxas and Kairi.

 

Kairi exhaled softly. Roxas had really believed that Smith was going to show with Namine, but then again, he said that they couldn't trust him at all. Well, Roxas was definitely right on that one; Sora and Namine had almost died because of it.

 

Sora understood that Smith was going to play dirty, and that was the reason why he went in to rescue Namine. Roxas' judgement was clouded by emotion, and unfortunatly, the blond didn't understand that Smith wasn't going to return Namine. But man...Smith was even more evil than he thought. He had only seen Namine's condition for a few brief moments throughout the night, but he could clearly see Smith's cruelty to her. He definitly hadn't held back...against her or Sora.

 

Kairi lifted her gaze from the bed to Sora again, looking at his face though he wasn't looking at her. "How do you think you survived it? The gas?" she asked softly, elaborating on her question as she broke the silence between them.

 

Sora shrugged slighlty. He had no idea what the gas was, so he had no idea why it only made him sick. But Smith seemed pretty surprised...no, shocked, that Sora was alive. After everything, Sora wasn't questioning his survival; he was too glad to be alive at all.

 

Kairi kept her eyes on Sora for a moment, just looking at him. He was there...with her. He wasn't gone. Smith didn't kill him. Sora was still alive, sitting right next to her. Kairi thought last night that she would never see him again, before she left with Roxas.

 

"I don't know," Sora finally answered, his voice still soft. Right before he had passed out, Sora wasn't sure what was going to happen to him. It was a frightening feeling, but at the same time, he somehow knew he wasn't going to die. "I guess...I just wasn't about to die that easily," Sora added. "I've got too much to live for." The brunette finally looked up, turning his head to Kairi once again.

 

Sora sounded sure of himself, and when Kairi's eyes met his, she knew that he was. The girl nodded in agreement, red bangs coming in one of her eyes slightly as some of her red hair fell over her shoulders. That may have been true, but Sora was a strong person in general. He had gone through a lot of chaos within about six months now, and he was still here, his light burning just as strong as it did back then.

 

Sora smiled weakly, holding Kairi's gaze. Nothing was going to tear them apart, or ruin their love. Most importantly, nothing was going to get in the way of showing Kairi how much she meant to him. He gently brought up a hand, his fingers running lightly over her forehead as he moved her red locks out of her eyes.

 

Kairi felt Sora's fingertips run over her forehead lightly as her bangs were swept out of her eyes. She exhaled silently through her nose at the gesture, blinking once before she looked into Sora's piercing blue orbs.

 

Sora held Kairi's gaze as he lowered his hand, setting it down again once the gesture was completed. Her violet blue eyes were looking back into his, and he realized at that moment how glad he was to have her with him.

 

Kairi gazed at Sora silently, her violet-blue eyes connected with his ocean-blue. She couldn't really describe how grateful she was that he was here, though she wished it were under better circumstances; without the sickness. But still...everyone--Kairi, Sora, Roxas, and Namine--came out of this tragedy alive, but injured. All except for Kairi, anyway.

 

Sora blinked softly one time when he felt his headache worsen, and then blinked again when things started to blur. He quickly refocused on the girl in front of him, trying to ignore the feeling of sickness that he felt depleting his energy.

 

Kairi let her gaze lower from Sora's eyes, the girl feeling a wave of guilt hit her as she looked at her hands in her lap. Everyone had come out of this whole thing hurt, but her. Namine had been abused, Roxas had been severely injured. And Sora too, both from Smith and the bullet he had taken for her when Smith had fired at her. Kairi looked down at her hands. Look at her and you'll fine no sign of physical injury; she had come out of this unscathed...and it had all happened because of her.
