A rescue? Sora pushed away the thought, taking in the rest of Roxas' words. He really didn't know what to do, but he still wasn't the least bit comfortable with Kairi playing any role in this. Anything but that, and Sora would have helped completely. But no, he couldn't let Kairi get into that kind of position. He held Roxas' gaze, staying silent.

 

Roxas turned his eyes to Kairi, his blue orbs falling on her stern look.

Kairi noticed the tears forming in Roxas' eyes, which caught her off guard. She'd never seen Roxas so emotional before. "Namine shouldn't have to deal with this," she started, turning her gaze to Sora. "I want to help."

 

Sora shook his head, stepping in before Roxas could respond. "Kairi, I can't let you put yourself in a dangerous position like that." Sora could see that Kairi was determined about helping out, but Sora was equally determined in keeping Kairi away from danger.

 

"In a way, Sora, I already am," Kairi said, admitting the truth. "Even if I don't go, he'll come looking for me. And it'll be too late for Namine by then..."

Roxas winced slightly at her words, but he continued listening.

Kairi glanced at Roxas. "I don't want it to be too late for her. That's why I want to help." She gave Roxas a brief look, hoping he would understand the look in her eyes. She then turned her gaze back to the boy she loved. "We either settle this now...or we settle it later, when things are much worse."

 

Sora raised a hand, putting it to his face as he thought about Kairi's words. What she said was absolutely true, each and every part of it. He couldn't think of any words to say, unable to counter her arguement. Instead, he said what he was thinking. "I'm not letting you take place in any of this, Kairi," Sora told her, holding her gaze with soft blue eyes. "That's my final decision." He turned away, taking a few steps toward the hallway entrance before stopping. He looked over his shoulder, speaking to Kairi one final time. "I want you to stay here for the night, okay?" He wasn't going to risk Smith abducting her in the middle of the night.

 

Kairi took her hand off of Roxas' shoulder as she followed Sora with her eyes. She listened to his words, feeling a little disappointed. But she could feel his love for her, and she understood his reasoning. However, before she could respond, Roxas did.

Roxas felt his anger grow, and he suddenly felt betrayed. Sora wasn't willing to help, or let Kairi go. He wasn't willing to help Namine...? Roxas' eyebrows furrowed over his watery, blue eyes. "Fine," he said sternly. "Thanks for nothing." His blue eyes glared slightly at Sora before he went toward the door.

 

Sora stayed in the doorway, his back facing his friends. He shook his head softly, feeling Roxas' pain. "I'm sorry, Roxas," Sora said quietly, standing still for a moment before heading down the hall and toward his room. The discussion was over.

 

"Roxas, wait," Kairi called. She didn't want him to just storm out of here with the problem unsolved.

Roxas opened the front door without a word, and then stopped, turning around at Kairi's call. He met her eyes with his own teary orbs. He saw the look in her eyes, the will to help. He nodded once, though the frustration and anger from Sora's decision still affected him. He looked away from Kairi then, balling his hands into tight fists until the knuckles were white. He grit his teeth together before letting out a sound of frustration. He grabbed onto the door and swung it closed behind him as he stepped outside, the door slamming shut.

 

Sora headed down the hall, walking until he saw the familiar room coming up on his right. He turned into it and entered his room, scanning it blankly. He couldn't say why he did that; he was still unfocused because of his arguement with Roxas. They had never really fought before, but in this case...with his suggestion that Sora would let Kairi possibly get taken by Smith, Sora had to react defensively; it was the only option he had at the time.

 

Kairi winced slightly when Roxas slammed the door, the sound reverberating through the room. She exhaled through her nose, not really knowing what to do next. She was sure Roxas had understood her actions, so there was nothing she could really do except wait.

Roxas stormed down the pathway to Sora's house, not looking back as he headed to no place in particular. He had nowhere to go, really. The boy wiped at his eyes, trying to rid himself of the tears of sorrow and heated frustration.

 

Sora exhaled sadly, taking a few more steps forward before turning halfway, sitting himself down on the edge of his bed. He leaned forward, letting his elbows rest on his knees as he held his head in his hands. He wished in some way that he could help Roxas, but the one thing he asked of Sora was also the one deep he could never perform; he could never send Kairi into a dangerous situation knowing it may cost her life.

 

Kairi turned around and started toward Sora's room, where she was guessing he went. She crossed her arms over her chest, trying to hide her discomfort with this whole situation. Poor Namine... Poor Roxas... The redhead exhaled softly as she approached Sora's room, the girl slowing her walk as she turned to the right, stopping in the doorway when she saw his position.

 

Sora shut his eyes in sadness, unaware of another presence. He did feel very guilty turning Roxas away without any help, but Roxas' stance was clear: either Sora allowed Kairi to help out, or he didn't give any help at all. And though Sora wished it wasn't that way, that was the reality of the situation. As he told himself over and over again, he would never be able to live with himself if anything happend to Kairi through out this whole thing.

 

Kairi pressed her lips together in hesitance, the girl feeling the sadness in the room. She exhaled silently, starting toward Sora quietly. She didn't necessarily want to be alone, knowing what she was eventually going to take part in.

 

Sora inhaled silently before releasing it, the air exiting through his nose. This situation was really awful, and now he felt helpless to help Namine or Roxas get through it. Heh, some friend he was... but if he had said yes, what kind of boyfriend would he have been? He supposed in this case, he couldn't be both a good friend and a good boyfriend.

 

Taking a few steps forward, Kairi stopped next to Sora and sat herself down on the edge of the bed beside him, uncrossing her arms. She lifted up her hand and gently set it on his back, feeling the sorrow-filled aura grow in intensity.

 

Sora opened his eyes when he felt a light hand on his back, and he immediatly recognized Kairi's gentle presence. He let his one hand fall as he turned his head, facing toward the girl with sadness in the depths of his ocean-blue orbs.

 

Kairi met Sora's gaze, immediately recognizing the emotion within them. She let her hand start rubbing over his back slowly, not saying a word...because she didn't know what to say.

 

Sora held Kairi's gaze, appreciating her gentleness. "Thanks for not going against me on this," Sora said quietly, looking into Kairi's violet blue eyes. "I know you want to help, but it's too dangerous to let you get involved like that."

 

Kairi felt Sora's words hit her heart, but not in their usual warm, loving way; this time it hurt, like it was a stab to the heart. She really was going against him. The redhead only nodded slightly. "I understand," she said softly, avoiding his first statement.
