I can't get the volume level to display in Windows XP.

I've had this happen for a couple of days now. I have sound, there's no trouble there, and the volume up/down/mute buttons on my laptop work, and the volume icon is in the icon tray near the clock, but it doesn't display what the volume's level is at when I use the buttons.

Usually when I use the buttons, a little meter shows up on screen that either fills or removes green bars as the volume changes. I don't have it now, and I can't figure out how to get it back. It's a little annoying, but not as much as it could be if I didn't have sound at all. I tried going to my control panel, and couldn't find anything under the sound settings or even display.

I'm running Windows XP with SP3. Anyone have any ideas how to get it back?

Did you make any recent changes or did it just suddenly stop appearing?

Not that I know of, it seems like it just sort of disappeared. My last batch of system updates was done last weekend.

I'd recommend re-installing the keyboard drivers, if you haven't already.

I haven't tried that yet, I'll give that a go and see what it does. I'll come back and edit if it worked or didn't.

EDIT: After going to my manufacturer's website and installing not only the drivers for the keyboard but also for the audio device I have, I still don't have the "volume gauge."

Yep, that did it. First post on that link had a Dell computer, which I have, so I went to Start>Programs>Quickset , clicked it, gave it a minute, then pressed the volume controls on the keyboard. Voila, it's back.

Thanks Misty. I'm going to have to save that link so if it ever happens again I know what to do.
