Why are some parents, especially mothers, so protective of their kids when it comes to visual and audio things? Obviously, if your kid is, say, about age 10 and goes out with some friends, you get worried because of things like sexual predating, kidnapping, etc., which is understandable.

By visual and audio, I mean things like TV. Like I don't get the whole, "OMG! My kid can't hear the F word on the TV," "OMG! My kid happened to come across porn, so I need to punish him," etc.

Some parents, and, again, especially mothers, are even like this during our early teenage years. I don't get the whole point of it, honestly. Just using my two examples above, as we age and go through puberty (though puberty doesn't necessarily play a role), we'll start seeing more of that stuff and even swear ourselves, so why keep us in a box, figuratively speaking, as we grow up?

I mean, little kids hear worse swearing all the time when riding school buses because of students from middle and high school that ride, and then when they say a not-so-bad swear word or a swear word they heard on the bus at home or something, they get punished -- some parents will even make them eat soap.

    I just don't get it...
