Without the characters then FFXIII would have a TERRIBLE story where half of it is just reading those exposition things. How can you ignore the characters? ._.

I'm on my fourth playthrough of FFXIII. xD ...or is it my fifth?

I wouldn't say I disliked any character, but Snow was my least favourite. The only time I used him in battle (besides when I was forced to play him) was when I needed to get the growth egg before the final bosses. Vanille was painful to listen to at first but she grew on me. Hope went from down-in-the-dumps-revenge-filled-kid to team mascot. Sazh hardly changed, which is a good thing. Lightning isn't really a stoic introvert on the same scale as Squall. She hits her team and yells at them when she is angry. xD Seriously, the only people she doesn't hit is Vanille and Hope. xD Then she becomes more compassionate and open with them. And Fang is Fang. She's that awesome she doesn't need an explanation.

Jube, your expectations shouldn't be too high for Versus. Don't want you to be disappointed if it's not as great as you hope.

Considering how long they have had to make the game, what I'm being promised and the travesty that Final Fantasy XIV was. Yes my expectations will be pretty damn high.

I don't ignore them per se, I just don't think that looking at them as the main story is what you need to do. There's more to a story than just the characters.

Please explain to me where the story comes from if there are no characters.

Stories, as I said before, are made up of characters. Without people, the story is just the world turning around, without interactions on it. Stories exist because people are in them or are there to tell them. Characters make stories as much as anything else. Even if it was just writing, a character wrote down that history for you. You are interacting with that character by reading his texts. If anything that a sentient mind created in a story, then that thing exists because of those characters. Characters are not only important to the story, but they are the story. Answer my earlier question if you wish to prove otherwise.

what's with the repeat? And yeah, characters are part of the story, but it doesn't....oh whatever, I can't explain it to you. You guys take things way to literally when I say them.

    >_>

More like you're not making any sense. You're like, "The characters aren't important" and now you're like "lol never mind"

not saying characters aren't important. I just suck at putting what I think into words, especially over the internet

The forum bugged out on me and posted twice. I fixed it.

That does not answer my question.

These kinds of cop out are very annoying. It reminds of people who say, "you are just too good at arguing." As if that excuses them from losing or being wrong.

Aqua101, you liked the story, right? That's what you're saying. That regardless of what the characters were like, the overall story was pretty great. Am I correct?

Same, I started to like the characters when I got more than half way through the game. But that is way to long to wait for. The only characters I also liked were Sazh, Fang and I also like Hope... even if he looked like his clothes shrunk in the washer and he looked and sounded like Roxas.

edit: Characters actions shape out the plot, of course they are important when it comes to plot.

Am I the only one who liked Vanille? And I liked her voice, too. Honestly, I thought the voices were all good enough.

These characters got even more development than X and XII characters. All of them, not just the protagonists. And I liked the scenario. They had no hope to do anything whatsoever.

It's not the second coming, but it definitely holds it's own amongst Final Fantasy games. I haven't played all of the numbered Final Fantasies, but it someone were to judge all the aspects of all the games, they'd conclude that XIII is not the worst Final Fantasy.

The thing which didn't make much sense were the last two Eidolons, that was indeed pretty cheap.

ok, this is basically what I was trying to say, yeah.

Not an excuse, when it's true. You should see me trying to explain so many things. Doesn't exactly come out right

So would you still enjoy the story if the main characters were all like the main character from Pokemon? Never says anything, completely generic, and has no opinion?

Obviously, I liked FFXIII, just look at my signature. It isn't my FAVORITE, but I did like it. But they could've done so much to it to make it a greater game. I think my two most favorites are (lol surprise) Fang and Vanille. I just really really love their relationship in the game, and even if they did great with it, wished they expanded it more.

Oh, and I don't like Hope. BUT, I will defend him, because he does have a reason for his actions within the game. He watched his mother die right in front of him, and literally a few hours later was a walking timebomb to become a monster he most hated. And whoever says his fight against his summon is stupid, that is bullcrap.

Hope is "The Castle" of the team, if you don't notice. He can deal a world of hurt if you use him correctly. He can also take a lot of damage (in and out of battle) he had to deal with all the stuff going on with him and his family while trying to save the freaking world

    And he's only a teenager.

I disagree with EVERYTHING in this statement.
Final Fantasy XIII sacrificed too much that was in previous Final Fantasies for the sake of "story" that ultimately ended up making it lackluster.
The most obvious one would the lack of a memorable villain. When someone says the bad guy in Final Fantasy IX you think Kuja, when someone says the bad guy in Final Fantasy X you say Seymour but when someone says the bad guy in Final Fantasy XIII what do you say? I'm more then halfway through the game and I have yet to see any sight of anyone or any group that can be seen as an actual villain, Mecha Pope and his lackeys died a good 3 seconds after you met them.

But perhaps they're not supposed to be a bad guy, maybe it's just supposed to be trials and tribulations in which case I'm alright with that, I don't mind Final Fantasy doing something different. But the other sacrifices are completely uncalled for. No world map or ability to go back to previous areas is stupid and makes the game feel less like an RPG or more like a "point A to point B". The only place that even resembles a world map filled with unexplored opportunities is the big field in Cocoon that you get to HALF WAY THROUGH THE GAME! And after a certain point you can't get back. Remember all those XBOX HUEG beast you saw? All those pathways you could take to one destination? Only to go back and take another destination just to see what other treasures you could find? Imagine if the whole game was like that.
Final Fantasy X didn't have a world map but it at least gave you the option halt the story and go anywhere you want for a good while. This is something that was present in FINAL FANTASY I, there's no reason it shouldn't be in XIII

No towns and NPC's, Final Fantasy XIII was filled with beautiful cities and areas that you were vibrant and colorful. You also couldn't stray from the path AT ALL, in Final Fantasy VII even before you leave Midgar, you have an opportunity to talk the the civilians of the slums and get an insight on their lives, you might even get an extra item or two. You had a reason to talk to everyone and explore every nook and cranny. No towns is probably the greatest failure of Final Fantasy XIII. Final Fantasy has always been filled with those large towns that are filled with life. Shop's, NPC's, sidequest, tones of diversions that are common in Final Fantasy. XIII had none of this, all the shops were in Savepoints and all the "towns" were all set on rails.

And don't get me started on the "MASH X BUTTON TO WIN" battle system. The game actually OFFERS to automatically find the best attacks that you have for the situation and automatically use them for you.

Lack of towns and lack of ANYTHING from previous Final Fantasy games let alone previous JRPG's in general ruins any sense of immersion that you may have, it's like they show you this awesome Pseudo futuristic world but they give you very few opportunities to ever explore it outside of what the main plot wants you to.
So yes I can safely say that compared to EVERY other Final Fantasy (except for XI and XIV due to them being MMO's) Final Fantasy XIII lands it's place as the worst one.

But them not being able to talk to civilians and go in towns made sense, I mean they are feared beings on the run from the world.
    Everything else I agree with.

I hate to agree with the above statement, but it's true. They also failed in this aspect, over hyping the damn game to death. Square made it seem like it was going to revolutionize the whole series with it's greatness and game changing system of battling.

But they fall way far from their goal. It's bad that it needs more than a few tweaks, it needs to be fixed overall.

And I'm not excited for XIII-2, I mean I really want to find out what happens but they added a new guy out of the blue, and Serah is now a new protagonist? Why though? They haven't gave a good enough reason to do the sequel in my eyes.

You guys are being way too negative for me.

You either played it through or you did not. Do not be halfhearted about it.
