I was bored, so I decided to play a game of Hearts on my laptop.

It's been a long time since I played hearts on this computer, and I don't have the greatest of memories, so imagine my surprise when I see that my three opponents are Makaze, Tummer, and Loxare.

I must have edited that in when I first got my laptop. XD

Well, seeing as how I don't ride a horse, I don't think that would be a very accurate depiction of me.

    But yeah, sure, go ahead.

Dammit, I just finished watching Bunny Drop and then I'm hit with this. Why does the world want my heart to feel warm? Why now, in 2012, I start loving the world?

Well, better late than never, right? I just recently started liking the world myself. Fine time to do it, with the place ending this year and all that. XD

Right. Before then, I thought "only a chosen few will be allowed to live after I snap". Now, that list has grown quite a bit more.

Hearts is a card game, played by four or more people with a standard deck of playing cards, 52 cards divided into four suits, Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, and clubs, with each suit having a set of cards ranging from 2-10, followed by a Jack, Queen, King, and Ace, with ace being the highest value card. The object of the game is to get through a round while getting the fewest amount of points possible. Every card with a heart is considered a point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.

At the beginning of the round, the cards are shuffled and divided evenly amongst all players. Every player then selects three cards to pass to the player to their left, and then the game commences. Usually, the player with the two of clubs starts the round, by playing the two of clubs.

From there, it goes clockwise, every player playing a card of the same suit, and then the person who played the highest card takes the deal and plays the next card.

When a deal is taken, it is not put back into your hand, but left to the side in a personal discard pile. This discard pile is always face down, so nobody can just look over and see which cards you have.

If a suit is played, and a player has no cards of the same suit, he may play any other card in his hand. For example, if I was playing with you, and I played a two of clubs, and you had a card in your hand that was a three of clubs, you would have to play it. But if you didn't have any clubs in your hand, you could play any other card you wanted.

Then, the player who has the highest card of the same suit takes the deal. So if I played the two of clubs, and you played the three of clubs, and Tummer played the six of clubs, and Makaze played the Jack of diamonds, Tummer would take the deal, even though a Jack is higher than a six, because Makaze played a different suit than what I put down.

Points are gathered when a player takes a deal with a point card in it. With the hearts, this is usually done by someone playing a hearts card in a different suit. For example, if I played the two of clubs, you played the three of clubs, Tummer played the six of clubs, and Makaze played the Jack of Hearts, Tummer would take the deal because he had the highest card of the same suit, but he would also get a point because there was a Hearts thrown into the mix.

In this game, a Heart cannot be played at the beginning of a deal until hearts are "broken." This means that until Makaze played the Jack of hearts in a suit of clubs, I would not be able to start a deal with a heart. For example, if the deal went the way I said as an example first, I play 2 clubs, you play 3 clubs, Tummer plays 6 clubs, Makaze plays Jack of Diamonds, Tummer cannot start the next deal with a 9 of hearts.

But if hearts are "broken," meaning Makaze played the Jack of hearts instead of the Jack of diamonds, than Tummer, who played the highest card of the suit of Clubs and gets to start the next deal, can start it out with the 9 of Hearts if he so desired.

There is a risky move you can play in this game, called "Shooting the moon." To shoot the moon, one player must get every point in the round, meaning he took the deals with all the hearts, and he also took the Queen of Spades. If one person shoots the moon, he gets no points, even though he has all the point cards. Instead, every other player in the game gets the full ammount of points that he would have.

For example, if I took every deal that had a Heart in it, and I took the deal with the Queen of spades, I would have 26 points in my deck. But I wouldn't get any of those points. Instead, every other player in the game would get 26 points added to their score. But shooting the moon is risky, because if another player takes so much as a single point, then the player who tried to shoot the moon is left with all the points they tried to collect. I've played several games where I took 25 points because another player took one point and kept me from shooting the moon.

The game lasts as long as no one gets 100 points. Once someone reaches 100 points, the game is over, and the person with the fewest amount of points over the whole game wins. Sometimes, a game is over after 5 or 6 rounds, because someone racks up a lot of points. Sometimes, the game can last for a few hours, if everyone gets only a few points and nobody tries to shoot the moon.

So that's the game of hearts, I tried to explain it as simply as possible, but it's a pretty confusing game. I know that when I first learned how to play, it took me awhile to get the hang of it myself.

Haha, that would make quite an interesting game. XD

But yeah, I think the term "Shoot the moon" came from the old expression of "shooting for the moon," which pretty much meant somebody was really hopeful with an impossible task they were aiming for. If somebody had a dream that everybody said they couldn't attain, and they went after it anyway, it was called shooting for the moon. Trying to reach what is considered an impossible goal.

But it was pretty funny, before I got my laptop and started getting more involved in the forums, my sister's and I would change the names of the three computer opponents to different KH characters, so every once in awhile, we would get the news that "Xemnas shot the moon!" or "Hearts have been broken!" One time, Ventus broke hearts. XD
