I hate it when people begin their

thoughts with things like "I mean" or "Like." First off, it shows you're not committing to what you're saying. Why should I take you seriously if you're not affording yourself the same privilege? Secondly, it's a waste of words. I mean, these phrases are supposed to be injected in the middle of a thought to clarify what you're trying to say. What previous idea are you overwriting with "I mean" if you just started talking? Verbal tics are actually supposed to, like, mean something, not just be there because you don't know how to start your sentence with something concrete like "Well, I'm of the opinion that..."

No, see, that's different. It's forgivable to apply "like" to a sentence when you need to pause and think or clarify that you're not entirely certain if you're really nailing the thought on the head. The problem is when it comes at the beginning of a sentence, no provocation, no necessity of forethought. I'd rather the person just not speak; wait until they actually know what they want to say, then start off strong. Those words are put to better use later in a sentence.

 

This is going to throw a lot of people off and epic lulz will ensue. I applaud you, good sir.

You obviously misunderstand my meaning. When the phrase is the beginning of a thought, it serves no purpose; this does not necessarily mean it can't come at the beginning of a sentence. And this is exactly my point; people need to be more aware of the specificity of language. It helps to eliminate misunderstanding. Granted, my example is a relatively minor and harmless case; thank you for providing me with a slightly stronger one.

I'm afraid not. It's 'apologies', with two o's. And no, this thread was not directed at you. It was the result of spending an hour with a discussion group only one or two of which were willing to speak, one of them having committed the aforementioned offense.
