I'm a actually a little bit surprised no one around here has mentioned any of this just yet. Anyways, I've been watching all of the tracking on hurricane Irene, which made its way through he Caribbean earlier in he week. It's made landfall on the east coast of the United States, and is on track to threaten the Northeast. In particular, New York City is projected to get hit hard, and in fact, the entire city is being told to evacuate; according to reports, it's the first time a massive evacuation has been issued to the city. It's also projected to hit New England pretty hard, even inland.

And this is coming in the wake of an earthquake that shook up Washington DC earlier this week.

At this point, it's only a category 1, which isn't that bad, but my prayers go to everyone, regardless.

    Stay safe, guys!

I knew it was going to hit New York City hard, but I didn't imagine that it could possibly be hit as hard as it's being projected to. :x
It's horrible that all of these disasters are happening all of a sudden. First the earthquake, then the tornado in Northern US/Canada, and now this.
    It's just...I can't even describe it.

Like I said in the thread in Spam, I am keeping all of you on the East Coast in my thoughts and do wish (know) that we will make it through this.
    Stay safe guys. :c

It's supposed to hit Jersey pretty bad too, everything south of Exit 98 on the Parkway is closed off and mandatory evacuations for pretty much all of that has been ordered. Atlantic City's casinos have shut down for the third time in the 33 years that gambling's been legal there.
I'm listening to the radio pretty much 24/7, around midnight I heard that my county is currently having some towns do a mandatory evacuation. Almost all the towns around me are under mandatory evac, all others are voluntary but "strongly encouraged". NJ power companies are currently saying that if power goes out, it's going to be out for a few days. This **** shouldn't be taken lightly at all, it's supposed to be the strongest storm that's hit this area in decades. I'm fully prepared, and I hope that everyone else is too. If not, there's always shelters.
For those in affected areas, here's a link in regards to preparation, evacuation routes, etc. Like I said in the Spam Zone thread, just use common sense and you'll be fine.

Despite this I'm sure some idiots will be out on the water surfing or whatever and it's them I hope the most for because the rip tides will be insane.

Oh I know about Atlantic City. Funny story really. My mom, her husband, my aunt, baby cousin and uncle went there yesterday and they got kicked out because of the storm and they had to come all the way back to New York xD

Surfing in a hurricane? I feel sorry for the people that will do that.

Anyway, what time do they predict it will hit?

Well it depends on where you live on the coast, but between Saturday Evening to about Sunday Night i think. That's where most of the people will fall under.

As Wolfie said, it's a big deal. Yes there have been worse hurricanes even in recent times, but this is the first hurricane of this magnitude to hit this area in a long time.

Areas around me (including half my town) are under mandatory evacuation.

The only upsides I've heard so far is that the predictions are getting better (earlier today it was said to hit as a Category 2/high Category 1, it's now gone down to a Category 1 or even a Tropical Storm).

NYC things are apparently going to be really bad, I'm pretty sure this is the first time they've had a full evacuation like this. Basically everything is shutting down there. Trains & everything are going to stop running tomorrow afternoon.

The news may be over exaggerating things but I'd rather be over-prepared than under. I'm still quite scared and hope we all make it through safely.

I live in Central Massachusetts, actually closer to the Connecticut border. My area won't see Irene until about 2 am Sunday, maybe 2 pm, but we're getting the brunt of the rainfall. The Governor's already issued a state of emergency for the entire state.

I was checking the news this morning and it has deteriorated to a Cat. 1, but I'm still not celebrating just yet. Trust me, I'm treading with caution here. Bad enough we had a tornado up here 2 months ago, I don't take anything lightly anymore. They showed most of inland New England in the Tropical Storm threat now, with southern New England, the Cape, and the seacoast at Hurricane Threat.

Hoping I don't lose power here (but if I lose power at the daycare center I've been working at all summer I wouldn't mind a day off. We've been told if there's a state of emergency and we lose power to not come in.)

Irene passed through here. And then went on to pass through Dominican Republic...where some people died. It's really terrible. I'm glad that it didn't cause too much damage here, but the people that died...well, that's unfortunate.

    Wow, that's terrible. =/

    I'm glad you're okay, though, Chev. :)

My condolences and prayers go to those people's families.

Just heard a report that three are dead in North Carolina and Virginia.
Currently NJ Transit is totally down, buses are only going to run for about 20 more minutes. Major airports are also shut down. Estimated 2 million people have been evac'd from the area. There's also a tornado watch in Jersey's southern counties.
The storm is supposed to hit between 6-8 PM tonight.

Tornadoes on top of hurricanes is not a good combination. Also, three more deaths? My sincerest wishes to the families again.

I can't believe a category 1 could do that, but I guess it can.

Wolfie, I really hope you stay safe. I guess just turn everything off -- gas and electrical things -- an hour or so before the storm and go into your basement or wherever your safe area is and brace yourself.

    *sends out prayers*

I posted in the thread in Spam but I wanted to say it again: Be careful everyone, and stay safe. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers.

Never ever underestimate mother nature, make sure to take all of the precautions available to you (get a good idea of what provisions you have and stay away from doors and windows if you're staying home). Be cautious and sensible -- it always pays to be prepared; we will be awaiting your safe return.

I believe the death toll for the entire East Coast is now up to eight people. That's eight people too many, I guess, but things could have been a lot worse.

The storm is thankfully deteriorating, as Wolfie mentioned, but it's still about 300 miles wide.

I'm in Boston. We're preparing for the worst, but I still have to work tomorrow.
