On the contrary, if they lived there they would be even more convinced of the nationalistic mindset. Everyone makes play at the idea that they know it isn't perfect, but they still claim it is the freest and therefore the best country in the world.

To be more specific, most people are conservatives, and conservatives are generally nationalists. They will insist that you stand for the anthem and all of that. Have done so to me many times.

Yes, but few are as full of themselves as the Unites States. There is believing your nation is great, and then there is believing your nation is the freest. They disgrace the day they celebrate.

National pride is far from a the fringe in the US; in my experience it has been standard.
