Guten tag means "good day". Guten abend means "good evening"

And whou?

 

Actually in german you have to capitalize every noun so its Guten Tag and Guten Abend.

 

Actually wouldn't you also have to put umlauts over certain letters so that they sound like the letter they are? So it'd be "Güten Tag" and "Güten Abend"?

 

Uhhhh no. Umlauts create entirely different sounds; they're counted as separate vowels in the German alphabet. "Guten" uses an "oo" sound; it's not the same as the ü sound, which is kind of like a "yeu" sound.

Most umlaut sounds actually require the use of the lips to say properly, unlike English vowels which can all be said by a droopy-eyed coma patient if you whack 'em on the stomach just right.

 

Ah, ok. Its been quite some time since I studied German so I'm really rusty.
