http://www.slashfilm.com/g4-is-no-more-will-be-rebranded-in-2013-as-less-geek-more-gq/ Had the channel been all about video games as it should've been rather than showing re-runs of Cops and Cheaters, I probably would've been disappointed about this.
Do gamers even watch G4 anymore? I stopped watching when X-Play became garbage. They dumped all their good skits. Honestly, the internet is a better place for a gamer's appetite anyways. Kotaku, Siliconera, Andriasang, Machinima, and plenty of others have filled the void in my life where G4 used to be. At least now they won't be under a false label. So this is a plus.
Yeah, I stopped watching G4 when... it became G4. I remember watching Extended Play on Tech TV and then eventually the early years of X-Play up until about the time Kingdom Hearts II was released. Adam Sessler was a great host, which gave it that nerdiness yet comedic aspect to it all. I guess that's why he left the network all together. :| Ah well, good things don't last forever. My friend tells me that G4 might supposedly become the next MTV and whatnot. But who knows...
G4 was a gaming channel? Only time when I really saw something gaming related was when they show E4, I only knew that channel as one the only channel that plays Kill Bill volume one. So this rebranding does not bug me in the slightest.
I've stopped watching G4 completely because I usually watched it for Attack of the Show and X-play. Well Kevin Pereira left Attack of the show sooo it kinda sucks now. I just get my news online now, and on youtube.
Have to agree that the channel has been **** lately, I still occasionally watch X-Play but I dislike the newer hosts & skits (they're just so... not funny?), Attack of the Show has always annoyed me, and the rest is just bad re-runs. Except Ninja Warrior! That I enjoy. If anything I think it'd be good for them to go the opposite direction and focus more on "nerd culture"--there's not really many channels that do that but, while it may be a niche, they could be the sole provider there, instead of becoming one of the masses. But eh. Not much of a point since Sessler left.
I haven't seen G4 in a very long time, it honestly just plays Cops/Cheaters 24/7 most of the time (which never, ever made sense to me) but, I actually liked watching X-Play and Attack of the Show, and as soon as a lot of it changed and you hardly saw anything about it on the actual channel, I just jumped ship. Its a bit sad though, because it'll most likely become a Spike TV 2.0
G4's still around? I haven't been able to watch it since DirecTV dropped it. I don't blame them either with how utterly shite the shows were. Hell, most of the time I watched that channel, it wasn't even a show about gaming or technology! Only Attack of the Show and some X-Play kept me around (used to be my favorite show on TV) I really really miss TechTV. It was always my favorite channel on TV. Then it merged with G4, and it was...ok. Then G4 completely took over and it become Spike 2, except Spike have the VGA's, which are always awesome.
G4 has slowly been dying for a while. now, it's completely dead to me. x play used to be the shiznit.
X-Play & Attack of the Show cancelled: http://www.gamespot.com/news/g4-cancelling-x-play-attack-of-the-show-6398986
The one good thing about all this is we get to hear from Adam Sessler and Kevin Pereira unfiltered now. Kevin has a 2-3 hour long weekly web showthingy along with some other projects and Adam is back to covering and reviewing video games and the industry on Rev3Games on youtube, which is great to hear his legit thoughts and opinions on a couple of his shows once or twice a week.
There was a time when X-Play wasn't garbage? I only watch the channel for the G3 Awards occasionally. Other than that, I don't care much for the channel. They weren't as geeky as I wanted them to be in the first place. I'd rather go watch the "Nerdist" on BBCA.
Sighhhh. Anyone else remember Judgment Day? A.k.a. the At the Movies of video games? Always considered it the superior X-Play. I think I lost interest in G4 when they first stopped airing it, and that was ages ago. Although apparently it was rebranded as Reviews on the Run and has aired on G4 Canada ever since. Lucky bastards.
I don't want to hate G4, but I gotta be honest. It's been a downfall and still falling. It's like taking away cartoons from Cartoon Network. No one wants that, but that's the path they decided to follow. I haven't watched G4 in years and I don't plan on watching it in the future.
I'll be honest, I was back and forth when it came to G4. I used to watch it very religiously, especially with shows like X-Play, Judgement Day, and Arena. The thing that first made me stop watching it was when they changed X-Play. They were gradual changes; like there were less skits in the show, it became less funny, and the final nail in the coffin was that they decided to take a completely serious tone all together. If you want to make serious reviews, I'm fine with that, but that wasn't what X-Play was about. It started off as a reviewing show that really wanted to entertained the audience and made fun of all games, the good and the bad. I then got into Attack of the Show for a bit, but always came back for shows like Unbeatable Banzuke and Ninja Warrior (around the time I also got into anime). And when they brought back the retro re-runs for that long while, that's what really brought me back. Eventually, I got bored with it. AOTS had lost its spark for me, I tuned on only for Ninja Warriors I haven't seen, and there was just better stuff on other networks. In the end, G4 was betraying what it originally started out as simply to grab a wider audience. When that didn't work, the only thing they could do was re-tool it into something that seems to be pandering to a lowest common denominator to get as many viewers as possible. The only good thing about it for me is that they're still keeping Ninja Warrior (I think). But, it's like Adam Sessler said, "If no one's watching, things are going to get cut".
