This week your usual hosts (@Misty , @Llaverion , and @libregkd ) sit down with @soma and @Cstar to discuss virtual reality. Virtual reality has been a popular topic in gaming in the last few weeks, after Sony announced their new Project Morpheus at GDC 2014 and Facebook purchased Oculus Rift for $2 billion.

If you don't know anything about virtual reality, don't fret! We go through the basics of what VR actually is and some of its applications. We also make a lot of Star Trek jokes.

We are going to! This was a bit of an afterthought mentioning it, it only really concluded a few days ago.

 

I do love listening to these. You guys are always so chill, and I always love hearing cass complaining about lightning/toriyamayou answer everyone's questions.

(also very frightened about the future Staff Questions podcast)

I think facebook did alright with jumping into the virtual reality boat. o: I think that they just did it for publicity then for personal events, but that's just meeeee. 3D printing main purpose was for medical purposes. xD @Llaverion for your gun, it's actually illegal to make guns (or something like that). Which is why they can't do it, but they can make parts to make a weapon function better. They use cells! CELLS to make these items, it's not a fabric or anything which is why food is weird. :x Waaahh it's early, excuse me. If you have netflix you can watch the documentary on there! It's awesome.

ASSUMING THIS IS ABOUT HER, I have seen it, greatly enjoyed it, and I disagree with what those Tumblr posts said, lol.

Without going into too many spoilers, there are elements of the MPDG in Samantha & the other OSes in the beginning (which considering the fact they're stated to be sold expressly for lonely people right within the first 20 minutes of the film is like "yea and????").

But Samantha's character, and the nature of the OSes in general, gets fleshed out more throughout the film. I hesitate to confidently call it a full subversion of the trope, as the film doesn't delve into the full complexity of Samantha's character (namely her existence as both trying to be more human yet also being a machine), but I would definitely not say it's MPDG game is at 100%.

 

All I did was make some sort of noise in agreement.

I had a pretty fun time on this podcast, thanks for having me on and I hope everyone who tuned in enjoyed it

 

Yeah I haven't written off the film on that basis nor am I judging it solely on what I've heard, that'd just be silly. It did turn me off a little from the film but I also wasn't terribly inclined to see it in the first place. That said, I can still enjoy movies with manic pixie dream girl elements even if they do bother me a little -- an excellent example would be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's one of my favorite movies and they do, in one scene, address the issue ("Look man, I'm telling you right off the bat, I'm high-maintainance, so... I'm not gonna tip-toe around your marriage, or whatever it is you've got goin' there. If you wanna be with me, you're with me... Too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive. But I'm just a ****ed-up girl who's lookin' for my own peace of mind; don't assign me yours"), but it's definitely still present and I acknowledge that. Still love the film.
