"All fair in love and war." Rhyme nodded, before sitting next to Near again.
Near watched her. It wasn't like Rhyme to keep secrets. Normally, she told him everything.

 

"What about Matsuda-San? she seemed to like him"

 

Rhyme shrugged. "Maybe she has a crush on both of them...?" She smiled, looking over at Matsuda.

 

Matsuda went red and shrunk slightly in his chair.

Ryuzaki smiled. "Something tells me he was listening to our conversation instead of working, isn't that right?"

He shrank even further down almost falling off the chair.

 

Rhyme laughed at Matsuda. "Why? Whats wrong? OH! You have a crush on Toshiko too!" Her eyes lit up. "We have a love triangle here!"

 

"No! There's no triangle!" he protested going pinker.

 

"Then why're you going pink?" Rhyme asked.

 

"I have hayfever!"

"Inside a building in winter?, and hayfever makes you cry"

"DAMN IT!"

 

Rhyme's face changed to a frown. "Predicted reaction." She said sourly. "You need to learn to think on your feet. Hayfever doesn't work inside in winter unless there's flowers around. You could have said 'I'm hot' or 'I'm feel sick slightly, I think I have a fever'. THINK! What if Kira had allies that would do anything to silence the police? If they captured you or saw you near their base, you need to think of something on the spot."
Near nodded. "Like this. What're you doing here?"
"My car broke down and I left to get some help for it."
"In this neighbourhood? What're you doing driving around here?"
"I had to take a detour from my usual route. Too much traffic."
"Really? The roads are clear on the main ones."
"I don't take main roads, I take smaller roads that can get busy at this time. Sorry if I shouldn't be here."
"Hang on, we could help you start your car."
"Thats fine, I don't want to trouble you."
"We'd be happy to help. You look like a police officer."
"I'm not. I just came from a fancy dress party. I made this pass as a officer but its fake."
"And so on. You see Matsuda? Rhyme thought on her feet." Near looked up at Matsuda.

 

Matsuda frowned. "That was a little harsh"

 

"Did you think us two would be fun and games and naive little children?" Rhyme asked.
"We can't afford to be kind on this case." Near said, resting his head in his hand.

 

"I didn't expect you to start bullying me" he sulked.

 

"Oh dear, I feel evil now." Rhyme sighed. "Sorry Matsuda." She jumped up and ran over to him, giving him a hug.

 

"It's okay" he said less than enthusiastically.

 

Rhyme frowned, glaring at him. "I'll repeat." She coughed slightly. "Oh dear, I feel evil now." She hugged him tighter, almost cutting off his breathing. "I'm SORRY Matsuda."

 

"Ack, okay okay I believe you!" he choked.

 

"Good." Rhyme let him go and walked back to the sofa where she sat.

 

L placed his empty coffee cup delicately back on it's saucer and went into thought, staring off into the distance, which also happened to be in the direction of Toshiko's art book.
