I think perhaps the French people speak French.

Actually, that's how French was developed, more or less. Someone just randomly wrote some Latin characters together using grammar vaguely resembling Latin, and tried to say them out loud.

 

Latin is a dead language.
Let it go already.

 

It's only dead once it is no longer used, commonly or not. I suppose Hebrew and Welsh are also dead languages?

 

Except Latin isn't mandatory in schools, while Welsh and Hebrew are official languages in Wales and Israel, and are commonly used. While still not mandatory in most schools, I know, they are used for other means, such as religious ones for Hebrew. Knowing Latin isn't that optimizing.
