    Your residence has very low expectations of you.

    They are not very bright around you, are they?

    We didn't really work with percentages, and our scales were from 4-10 (logic? what is that?). And in high school the majority of tests would only have 12 points total from two long-ass essays, so you'd divide your points with the 12.

    So for a ten you'd need 12 points
    Nine= 11 points
    Eight= 9.5 points
    Seven= 8.5 points
    Six= 7.25 points
    Five= 6 points

    And anything below that would be a fail. In languages you needed over 50% to pass, the rest of the grades were adjusted by overall class performance. The system for maths I never figured out, but that's because I really sucked at it >.<

    I made it up.

    You know how sometimes people will reply to a post with "This x2?"
    Like that. :smile:

    We don't have lettered grades at my uni.

    ≥70% - First class
    60-69% - Upper second class
    50-59% - Lower second class
    40-49% - Third class

    In the first semester, I got two firsts, one upper second and one lower second. Le sigh. I could have done sooo much better.
    I think that British marking criteria may be a bit harsher - don't quote me on that.. To get a percentage above 80% for an essay, for example, it is supposed to be of 'publishable quality'.

    Hardly ever share my own personal philosophies, but to be perfectly honest I feel grading is just horrendous. Learning shouldn't be a competition to get into the Top 10 of your class, or to get x score on some test you only take once or twice; it should be about truly learning about the world's cultures and finding out what you are really interested in and can be happy doing in life.

    But alas, corporate society, what can you do. *sigh*

    That is why English is the best subject; there is no right or wrong, there is only "did you adequately and effectively backup your argument." c:
    The education system in itself is fundamentally flawed, focusing on memorizing facts & not actually learning. There's nothing wrong with grades as long as other factors, such as effort, participation, etc, are equally weighted.
