Seems a few people are up for it, so I'll likely try to stream Wednesday in the morning (like, 10ish AM EST). I got a new headset so I WILL LIKELY BE TALKING. Me talking is also kinda necessary in order to explain some stuff storywise -- Transistor, for better or worse depending on your preferences, makes you work for the full understanding of the story. You can understand the main plot in one playthrough, but there's a lot of other interesting background bios that shed light into things more in depth.

Hey everyone! Summer's here, and if you've been a member here for at least a year, you know what that means. If you're a new member around the block, or just haven't noticed them too much before, the annual KH-Vids User Awards is finally here!

Join us in a friendly, unserious (yeah right!) competition to elect members and content for a variety of categories. Nominations are quite a ways off at the moment, but we are accepting category nominations up until June 7th! After this, the Awards will kickstart and the fun can really get going.

For more information on how the Awards work, please see the Info & FAQ thread.
To submit categories, please see the Category Suggestions thread!
If you have any questions, please message Plums and/or Jayn, and we'll be more than happy to get back to ya!

Hey everyone! As some of you may know, the User Awards run every summer. It is getting time for the 2014 Awards! Typically the User Awards are covered by @Misty, but this time, you will be governed by the lovely mother-son duo, @Jayn and @Plums! This thread will have some general information on the Awards, and is your go-to spot for any questions or suggestions you might have (excluding category suggestions).

    Nominating
    When will nominations be opened?
When category submissions have ended, nominations will be opened. This will likely be mid to late June.

How many members can I nominate per category? Can I nominate myself?
You may nominate two members per category. For couple categories (e.g. Cutest Fake/Real Couple, Best Bromance, etc.), you may nominate two couples; for thread categories, two threads, and so on.

Do note that for “worst” categories (e.g. Worst Female Member), you may only nominate yourself. Nominations for other users will be discarded. These are the only categories in which you may nominate yourself; however, for couple categories, you may nominate a couple you are a part of.

When nominating, use a member’s current username. Nicknames, real names, or former usernames will be discarded.

Please do not nominate inactive members. The 2014 User Awards cover the period from the end of the 2013 Awards (roughly August of 2013) to the present, so consider that when nominating. For example, if Joey was a Sectional Moderator in February of 2013, but left in March of 2013, do not nominate him for Best Sectional Moderator 2014.

How do I send in my nominations?
When nominations are opened, staff members accepting nominations will be listed. Please send only one message to each staff member. For example, even though you are sending Xavier your Thread Nominations and Best/Worst Member Nominations, just include it all in one message.

Please directly copy and paste the categories. You do not have to nominate for each category—just leave an N/A in the space. For example, even if I choose to not nominate anything for Thread Nominations, I will still include it in my message.

    Voting
    Public Polls & Alternate Accounts
Polls will be public, therefore we can check if someone is creating alternate accounts to boost votes for a particular member. If you are found doing so, you will be removed from this year’s awards, and will face our typical alternate account punishment.

Likewise, other users can see who you are voting for.

    Can I vote for myself?
You may only vote for yourself in a couple category (e.g. if Joey and Jim are in the running for Best Bromance, Joey can vote for the Joey & Jim Bromance).

In other categories, if you vote for yourself, you will be dropped from the category.

I want to change my vote!
If the poll is still open, message Misty about changing your vote.

    Misc.
If you would like to withdraw from the User Awards entirely, message me and I will take you out of any category you’re nominated for. I can also remove you from any polls you appear in. Please do keep in mind, however, that the awards are all in good fun—so don’t feel too bad if you’re submitted for Biggest Post Whore!

If you have any other questions or suggestions, feel free to reply to this thread. Have fun!

Below is the category list thus far. Within this thread, you can suggest potential categories for this year's awards. Please keep in mind that category suggestions should be accessible by many members--use your better judgement.

Newly added categories will be listed in blue, and rejected submissions will be listed under 'rejected' (naturally). Please check the rejected list before suggesting to make sure it's not already been rejected. Nominations are not open during this time.

We are making an effort to condense the category list this year so if there are categories you feel could go, feel free to suggest that.

    Happy suggesting!

Yes, but it's an unfortunate update.

Unfortunately, due to a lot of unforeseen time conflicts in the past few months, we won't be having the Wonderland event this year. There was talk of doing it during the summer, but between the KHV Awards, the Trivia Podcasts, and other ~coming to you soon~ items, it would be both unwise to host it then and even more unfair to people who are super excited to it. We do, however, have a pretty nice set up for it currently, and with putting it off, it has the potential to be even better than it has before.

Again, really sorry for this inconvenience you guys, and we will aim to be more on top of the time and it for next year.

Nope, you didn't miss it. I had never put the poll up since I was waiting on more suggestions & ended up getting busy. However, considering we were taking a max of three to implement and there have only been three suggestions, a poll may not be necessary at this point, heh.

Like Nova said, I think 'Like' could be useful enough, but if a number of people feel 'Useful' would be a nice addition in Help with Life, I wouldn't add minding it.

It's because horoscopes, and so on are designed to be as ambiguous as possible so that people can identify with them in general. It harkens back to the self fulfilling prophecy; we identify with those behaviors ('yes this sounds like me!!'), we begin to notice them ('oh my god i'm acting so Virgo today!') or see others notice, acknowledge & act on them, and that reinforces our belief in...anything really, being true, even when they're not necessarily the most accurate thing.

I'm sure the podcast hosts will be thrilled that you listen to the podcast, and if you have a topic you wanna suggest, a question about Lightning for the hosts, or want to join in, you can see this thread for more info -- we'd love to have some more people get in! Hope you enjoy your stay here at KHV, and if you have any questions, feel free to hit me or another member of staff up. :D

I think thin privilege just isn't a very good moniker in general. There are people that automatically judge people who are overweight/bulkier and people are bullied over this (I was pretty overweight when I was younger and there were comments flung in my direction before people got to know me). I do think that being overweight isn't necessarily indicative of poor health; I eat junk food way too much and am very out of shape. As Nova said above (thank god for 'load posts'), the way people retain/lose weight varies, and someone who could weigh 30 pounds more than me could probably be in much better shape than I am currently.

Weight is a sensitive issue to some people, and we should of course respect those wishes. But if they're trying to dogmatically force others to not compliment someone for losing weight and getting in shape when that person wanted to, then I have a problem with that. If someone legitimately wants to lose weight themselves, or start exercising or whatever, we should be happy for them. If someone doesn't want to be thin, or is fine with the weight they're current at, we should be happy for them.

People's bodies are their own, and if they feel good and proud of their bodies, then I don't think it's anyone's place -- overweight, skinny, buff, etc. -- to judge them for that.

Ah yeah, I liked those too. You're right, LoK does have some really endearing moments like that; the Airbabies are all really great, and it was nice seeing Tenzin interact with each one. Jinora having a hand in the plot was also good (even though it was done poorly for her after 'A New Spiritual Age'). Tenzin's siblings were also great, and I really wish they expanded on that conflict some more as it was so interesting to think about their relationship with Aang/Katara and how things got shaped considering Aang had to do stuff with Tenzin to continue the Air Nomad traditions, what that meant for Kya/Bumi, and so on.

tl;dr: LoK is not as good as Avatar and I am very opinionated on cartoons.

I don't think LoK is bad, so much as it comes nowhere close to the original series. Avatar was, except for maybe the Toph-Sokka crush being dropped and Suki being kinda thrown in at the end, probably the most perfectly constructed Western animated series I've seen, imo. I can't speak to Adventure Time or anything else like it since I haven't seen it yet, but yeah.

    The writing staff from Avatar to Korra plummeted a lot; as in, from near 20 to 4 as of Book 2. This obviously had a major effect on the writing, as there's not too many people to refine ideas with and its much easier to get not so well constructed things into the story. When I first watched it, I was convinced Book 2 was a stronger product overall then Book 1 was, but watching it again it has the same overall problems, but different in a sense;

The most important is that a lot of characters got shafted and their development was weirdly done. Asami was relevant for like...five minutes, Bolin was kind of an ******* (understandable when you get the full backstory on him and Mako but they don't address this in relation to Bolin and don't show him falling into it). Mako continued the "I DUNNO WHO I LIKE LMAO," but we never see anything more to his character than that! We get all these hints Mako is deeper, that he loves his brother and cares for his friends/ragtag family, but we never get to be inside his head. We never get to see what Mako feels, only hear about it in the most awkward & pretty offensive way to Korra and Asami (who feels like a punching bag at this point, tbh).

Korra herself suffered a lot in the beginning because they gave no good reason to explain why she was so mad, and she just came off as acting like a complete ******* for a good 5-6 episodes. They tried to explain that it was because her dad/Tenzin , but the way it was presented made it seem like they were actually in the right and Korra was just being a pissy pants. WEIRDLY enough, they do show , but only after Korra stopped acting so infuriating.

Probably the best episodes in the season were the Beginnings ones (which honestly are on par with A:TLA which is baffling considering how Korra has gone so far), and 'A New Spiritual Age'.

I have some hopes for Book 3, but I know not to get my expectations up nearly as much as I have before. At this point, I just hope for Asami and Korra to actually have a friendship not based around Mako for god's sake.

I like LoK and do like watching it even if it's not nearly as great as Avatar. I really like Korra as a character, and like the worldbuilding they do post-Avatar, but the writing has taken such a dip in quality between series that LoK is only mediocre at best, and makes me so mad considering its roots and what it is perfectly capable of being.

Ugh. I started reading up on this on Twitter and it's honestly sickening.

It's clear clear he had some sort of mental disorder (though, I think it's more of a mental illness from the sounds of his lack of empathy/delusions of grandeur), and people who are focusing on "he should've learned to get laid!" or "I wonder who rejected him" are just as bad. (<--- Although I've only seen people say they've seen this being said across the Internet without any sources, so take that with a grain of salt).

The US is far too lenient with gun policies and very poor with mental health care. It is pretty easy for someone to acquire a firearm -- in my area alone, I've been to at least five shops that I know do sell them without too much fuss. As a country, it needs to hammer down and make the policy less forgiving; deeper background checks, required psychological assessment, incarceration records...the works. Furthermore, mental health care needs to be much more accessible and less stigmatized than it currently is. There are many people who go through life without getting the treatment they need because they honestly don't think they have a disorder, or are adamant against any kind of medicine as they see it as falsified emotions, despite it being the same as 'regular' medicine -- it's to help the chemicals in your brain return to a state of normalcy instead of being in disarray as they are now.

Equally as important is this demonization and treatment of women as purely sexual creatures, and objects to be won and bartered at men's leisure. It's extremely disheartening that this incident is what it took to get the mainstream media/audience to address and discuss this long standing horrific treatment of women, even though there are probably still people who refuse to acknowledge it or even try to fix it.

To be honest, I'm not inclined at all to believe this will incite change, as previous tragedies/shootings saw an outcry and similarly just...nothing came of it. I really hope this time is different, and that as tale said, we can be able to fix ourselves; very likely not soon all things considered, but at a quicker pace than we have been doing. Condolences to the families that suffered from this though, and people who are likely now even more fearful of this now more than ever. This is terrifying to read and even think about, and I really want to see a stop to these situations someday.
