You may choose one mage to train under to become experienced in some form of magecraft.
What you do with your abilities are entirely up to you, you may become a villain, a hero, or whatever.
The more you use your powers the more likely you will encounter other mages, strong, weak, wise, naive, good and evil.
    You may choose from.....

Nature Magic: An elderly old women offers to teach you nature magic, while training under her you will travel the wilds of Europe and Asia. Nature magic grants you the ability to command animals and plants; you can shapeshift into plants and animal forms and with experience the ability to shapeshift freely, even into mythical beasts(dragons, wyrvens, etc). You will also gain the ability to summon natural phenomena such as lightning storms and minor earthquakes.
In order to master nature magic you must have reverence and respect for nature. To reach full potential you will be living your life in the wild much like the old women.

Necromancy: A sharply dressed man offers to teach you Necromancy within his large and mostly empty mansion. Necromancy allows you to suck the life out of other people and transfer it into energy which can be later used for magical feats such as healing, enhancing physical abilities temporarily and creating golems out of inanimate matter, you can even raise the dead as your mindless servants. At a beginner level these undead will be no different then a Romero zombie except for the fact that they won't attack you but at a higher level you will essentially begin summoning vampires complete with super speed, strength, shapeshifting, healing, minor magical abilities and turning other beings into your minions by sucking their blood. These vampires will be under your complete control unless you choose to give them free will.
To master Necromancy you will need to be brutal and ruthless. You will gain an aura that causes people to fear and distrust you unless they themselves are a mage.

Chi Magic: A kindly old monk offers to teach you to control the chi within yourself. You will be living in a Tibetan monestary and be expected live a ascetic lifestyle. Chi magic will allow you to harness the chi within yourself to perform amazing feats such as enhanced super speed, super strength, superhuman durability and amazing reflexes. These enhancements have absolutely no limit and if you're good enough you could move faster the speed of light while having the durability to sustain light speed friction and the strength to lift entire continents along with reflexes so keen you could react to a bullet coming at you the very instant it leaves the barrel. Using your chi will tire you out though as an inexperience mage.
Chi magic requires strict discipline and a willingness to train. Devoting yourself to chi magic will require you to train most every day to maintain and improve your abilities.

Mental Magic: A stern looking women offers to teach you mental magic. You will be staying in a comfortable hotel that she owns. She has very high expectations of you and will be very strict during your training. Mental magic grants the user the ability to read minds, influence minds and at higher levels the ability to control minds. People who have been controlled will realize afterwards that someone was controlling their thoughts and actions but those who are influenced will not know. An experienced mage may be able to realize who it was that controlled them and even track them down so be wary. You also gain telekinetic powers though not much stronger then your physical limitations, you can also learn technopathy allowing you to control machines and other electronics.
Mental magic requires intellect and concentration, if you go beyond the limits of your abilities you risk a mental backlash that may knock you unconscious or even put you in a coma.

Void Magic: A strange androgynous individual offers to teach you void magic. While training you will be staying at home for a majority of your time, only going outside for necessities. The individual at seemingly random times will appear in your house and demand a training session. Void magic is channeled through the space between worlds, it's most basic ability is being able to see anywhere in the world. Later you will be able to look into potential futures. It also grants you the ability to warp space allowing you to teleport yourself and others as well as objects. It also grants you a small degree of control over time allowing you to temporarily speed up, slow down or stop time. At higher levels you will be able to create pocket dimensions as well as make "jumps" into the past.
Void magic requires mental fortitude and will power. You must believe you have the skill and capabilities to do whatever it is your doing. If your will is to falter you may rupture space time causing who knows what and even fling you into other worlds which you may not be able to get back from or even survive in.

Necromancy seems the most manageable. Decent returns for decent effort, no anti-universe level attacks is fine with me.

Debating with myself between Necromancy and Void Magic

On one hand control of the undead which is always fun, but then everyone hates me because of some terror aura or something.

On the other void magic does seem pretty cool, I've always wanted to teleport, would make going to McDonalds on a rainy day a lot easier, and controling the space-time continum is pretty badass. However if I lose even a little bit of confidence in my abilities I may fling myself to the space between spaces or some crap. Plus training takes place at home.

    Hmm...

EDIT: Eh, I guess I'll go with Void Magic. Time and space is my bitch.

    Void magic.

Exactly what I would study if I actually had this choice.

Is it bad that I feel that if most of you are looking only at the advantages and not the costs and drawbacks?

I'm a gambler by nature. I probably haven't considered the drawbacks because I don't consider them drawbacks. They come with the territory.

You chose the one with the worst drawbacks from my perspective.

I'm sure it'd be hard for me to be a sort of hermit, but all pros have their cons and I'm willing to take them in stride. Anyone who doesn't is a fool. For the power, I think it'd be interesting to see what kind of challenges I'd be brought. It's a gamble I'm willing to take.

I don't see how. My drawbacks would never cause my immediate and direct death and they don't interrupt my daily lifestyle.
