It's because it has a forum on it.

There's content on dA that is inappropriate for school, like others say. Just as there's content on here that's inappropriate for school. They tend to frown up most forums and chat websites, because there's always the idea that you're going to meet a 50-year-old man on here that's going to kidnap you. There's certainly websites they miss (like this one, though is differs from school to school) because they can't go around blocking each and every website that has a forum attached to it.
There's ways around blocks, though. ;D

Which I'm pretty sure is blocked by almost every school.

But yea, most sites are blocked because of inappropriate content and it can be distracting. You're at school to learn, not to slack off and play games and look at art.

He lives in the US but he goes to a Catholic school so they might have different standards when it comes to blocking sites.

Odd, at my school, it's not blocked at all. I went on there during my TA class last year.

Oh, blocks are funny. We have to go on this site called Debut Art to find artists for research, and it'll block the results for searching the 'men' tag because of violence... but it won't block the results for searching the 'sex' tag. Really.

I'm glad I never had to worry about. This topic reminds me of this one show from "Fairy Oddparents" where Timmy and his friend wanted to watch some violence and all of a sudden a big block with a grin flashes across the screen, spins and says block block block several times.

Yeah the forum and adult content would make the school system block it

Just as an example as to why it would be blocked, I once was wandering around Recent Deviations looking for inspiration and do you know what I found? Instead of inspiration I found a picture of a woman with a banana up her vajayjay, so yeah, several acid rinses of my eyes later the image is still burned into my mind.

So the filters are warranted <:

It's annoying, I'll admit, but I think blocks are there for a reason. You're at school. On a public computer. Connected to the entirety of the school's network instead of your personal one. Since you're at school...learn.

My school had a very strict filter, but the upperclassmen knew a way to change the IP so it'd let us pass and we'd just change it back afterwards. If you usually needed something school related off a blocked website, the librarian would usually help you get past it as long as you could prove it was for school.

I never found that a bad thing, even if you had free time, if you're at school, do something education related.

As Peter Griffin once said, the only difference between art and pornogrpahy is a government grant.

Artwork has nudity in it, and everyone has their personal opinion of art. "I may not know art, but I know what I like."
So I guess that's just a way to ensure that there's no nudity shown to students at all.

And the culture may just be a way of downplaying of differences in people?

I guess so. Kind of stupid with the culture part. How will we ever learn...

Anyway, on the main topic, my school actually allowed Deviantart for the longest time, which was awesome, but then it got blocked. My friend sent a message as to why they should unblock it and they allowed it again, for a breif time. I understand why it's blocked but we're in highschool. I am probably baised against it cause I love to draw and all and DA proved to be a great source of references and inspiration and my printer wouldn't work for the longest time so the media center was a great place to print out stuff I needed. Shame it's blocked now...
