When did you start caring about the quality of dubs?

Just curious.

I only really started caring when people pointed it out to me. I suppose I was just enjoying the anime/cartoon so much that the voices barely made much of an impact on me.
And that's when I took notice of 4Kids :/

I wish I could go back to being like that.

 

A long time ago. I very rarely watch dubbed animes anyway. That goes for movies too. I just can't stand them.
So I end up watching the original version with subtitles.

When it comes to anime, I sometimes just love the over the top voice acting from Japanese VAs.

 

Effectively this. Though I have noticed I'm a really bad judge. Unless it is particularly bad (*cough*Aqua*cough*) I tend to not really notice and just see whatever dub I'm more used to as better. I don't think I've ever seen a dub so bad that it turned me off of the story, but there have definitely been some that I felt made me miss some of the intended experience.

NOTE: I refer to the original as a 'dub' as well here. Just to make it clear since that isn't always the case.

When I heard One Piece's dub, I quit.

 

I only realized that dubbing was a bad idea after the first time I watched a subbed series, which was Trigun, about five years ago. I have avoided watching dubs since then. English VA companies either do not take the job as seriously or have no feel for the characters at best, and at worst their voices don't fit with the author's original intentions. There very few exceptions. Not to mention the major butchering of things in translation.

 

I started caring around the time I started watching subbed anime about 5 years ago. A little while after that I started shunning dubs altogether believing that no it can never be as good as the original. However I started getting into voice acting and eventually I lessened my biased feelings towards them. At least I begun to comprehend the process of dubs and understood that dub actors have a handicap and I respect their work. Though I still believe original voices are best simply because usually the animation is built around their performances.

 

Hm ever since I watched Princess Tutu (better than it sounds). Watched first episode in English, stitched my eardrums back together and then watched the rest in Japanese. That aside though, as long as it's not horrendously bad, I'm okay with dubs for the most part. Especially for beautifully animated films and such, where I mostly want to concentrate on the art and not have to read subtitles.
