Was unsure where this topic would qualify so I just put it here. Found a weird butterfly thing and was wondering if anyone knew what it was or anything about it.... or if it's even a butterfly. I wanna set it free but don't wanna if it's something poisonous. Any info would be great. Sorry if the thread is in the wrong place.
Yeah, there's no harmful butterflies in our area. The only other thing it could be is a Gypsy moth, but yours doesn't look as...fuzzy.
My brother finally woke up about 30 min after I caught it and he put it in the neighbors butteryfly bush. DP - sorry if it was blurry but I used my phone cuz I don't have a camera and it was in a container. It sorta looks like the two pics combined without the orange.
Poisonous!? Are you serious or just kidding cuz it's not cool to kid about that. The things was in my room.
Butterflies, even if poisonous, don't have enough toxin to kill humans (or even large animals). Plus we don't have that type of butterfly in our area, so no worries.
I worry about things more than I probably should. It might've even been a butterfly. It could've been a not so fuzzy moth with different coloring sort of like the other pic you posted.
^This^ If I have the right impression on where you live (US, Midwest?) there aren't enough predators for poisonous butterflies to have been "chosen" by natural selection. The production of such a toxin would take just enough energy that it just wouldn't be efficient. You've nothing to worry about.
No...she's not in the Midwest. And even then, toxins produced by most butterflies don't kill, just make whatever eats it very sick, most of the time the toxin comes from the plants the catepillar larvae feed on.
