How is "we drank mutagen" more complicated than "we' re aliens" exactly ? But then if changing the back-story won' t even spare the audience some exposure ... why change it at all ? TO BLOW THE AUDIENCE MIND of course !

First off, Mike. Can I call you Mike? First off Mike, pretty sure kids are less likely to believe in radioactive sludge than aliens. For the simple fact that their parents tell them straight-up what radioactive slime actually does to you. Aliens? We got no fuckin' clue. Maybe they do look like giant humanoid turtles! Who's to say! I bet there's a race of giant rat-people out there too. And probably some rhinos. And also a planet full of gaudy over-dressed ninja-samurai hybrids or whatever. And probably one with some floating brains. Oh wait I think that guy's actually an alien. Ok nvm.

Second, Mike, and more importantly, let's get real. Nothing you direct is ever gonna be that convincing.
