The Game Awards are back again, celebrating the many excellent games of 2017. The award show will air online on Thursday, December 7 at 9pm ET on YouTube and Twitch. Several categories will factor in fan voting in addition to juried decisions; voting can be carried out on the official website or via Google search, Twitter DM, and Facebook Messenger.

A new award this year is the Student Game Award, featuring games created by high school and college students. The winner of this category will be decided by a panel of game developers--Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima, Iilka Paananen, Kim Swift, and Vince Zampella. Best Ongoing Game is another new category, showcasing games that have continued to put out new content for players. Best Mobile/Handheld Game has also now been split into Best Mobile Game and Best Handheld Game categories.

This year's Game of the Year contenders are:

    • Horizon: Zero Dawn
    • Persona 5
    • PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
    • Super Mario Odyssey
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Check out the official website for the full list of categories and nominees and for more info on voting.

What do you guys think is missing from the nominees? What do you hope to see win?

Shamefully I haven't touched ANY of these games yet, for various reasons. No Switch yet, and didn't feel like clearing the hard drive space for Persona 5 lol Kinda hoping it goes on sale soon. Have no strong desire to play the other 2, but I won't deny, this is a great list. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds holds the record on steam for most people playing at the same time, which is DAMN impressive for a game that comes from such humble beginnings. I would've put NieR: Automata on the list, but this year had so many big releases, I can't even blame them.

Student Game Award is a really cool idea also. Get a few dedicated young folks some good press: a healthy thing for the industry.
