666 is the sum of the letters/sounds that make up the name of Emperor Nero in Latin and was "evil" due to his vast mission and laws to persecute Christians in Rome.

 

That's still arbitrary to relate that to the devil. It's not like Nero was satan. He's not different than Hitler with jews, we could add up the letters in the german form of his name and get a numbers for the jewish.

As far as the book of Revelations was considered any mention of Satan was an allegorical reference to Nero and his oppression of Christians. The entire section was designed to be a criticism of the Roman Empire disguised as scripture so as not to insight a complete genocide while spreading the word. The number itself really has no meaning except that it's the numerological total of the sounds in Nero's name. From there those that took it literal developed distortions of the books' symbolism.
